Urban survival knife?

'Ignorance' is no defense.
Stainz

Consequently, 'ignorance' from the LEO is usually the biggest issue. I don't mean to sound negative to my blue brothers, but the majority of law enforcement officers I've conversed with are quite ignorant of the numerous laws as well. When the legal codes require lawyers to understand, then there will be issues for all of us. Here in Texas, any fixed blade up to 5.5" is legal to carry, but several are really unclear about it or throw in "concealed" weapons use or whatever else they "think" is the law. My brother-in-law is a Sheriffs Deputy in a little town outside Panama City, FL. I have a CHL for FL as well, but in FL, you can also carry a folder with a blade up to 6"...he was unaware and consider a folder that large a concealed weapon. I know that ignorance is no defense, but I am willing to chance that a good, honest and felony-free citizen will typically get overlooked or a simple wrist slap if some obscure law is slightly bent. It's a risk I'm willing to take for my own protection. Chances are whatever you're carrying will most likely be confiscated, so don't carry something that will break your heart to lose.

I'll pull out my "urban" emergency tools later for a picture...nothing too expensive, but they should get me out of a jam outside of volcanic lava, meteor strikes or some bio-engineered zombie virus:D

Alot of police work is gut instinct. Its not their job to know the finer points of criminal law, thats a judges job. Unfortunatly they take alot of flak for that. They know the basics, and sad thing is alot of them arent willing to learn the finer points of that kind of stuff. They dont lke civilians telling them either. It makes them lose the controll aspect of the scenario, which is what they need to have in order to establish command of a situation. Alot of them carry that "Cop" mentality too, that everyone is a bad guy. That is totally understandable too, I know. Its easy when you deal with asshats all the time to forget that not all people are asshats.

Not being offensive. My pops was a cop, my grandpa was a cop, I have 2 uncles that are cops. I support the badge.

That said, I have never took one ounce of flak from them. Partially because I wont. Partially because I am laid back enough to stroke their ego, which is what some, not all, but some want. "yes officer, I be a good little citizen":p;)

Fonly, how much was your blade?

also, you probably already know this, but when stopped anad asked about it, do not ever say its for self defense - that will = byebye knife, and a possible set a new bracelets. Its a cutting tool, rescue tool, i use it for work and for recreation.

Canada's knife laws are based on INTENT - whats you intended usage? also dont carry downtown on a fri/sat night or into a club./bar etc. Bad news...

Couple of things in Canada there is not limit on blade size.
However a knife cannot be carried for self defense, that's why it is always a tool.
Pepper spray is legal to carry for use on dogs, but not people.

Doesn't Calgary have a bylaw against having knives visible when you carry them (including a clip when pocket carring)?

one of the funnier parts of Canada's laws is the sword law: Its legal to strap a sword (over 20" ) onto your back and walk around freely. Its just not advised: people panic , swoon, pass out, gnash their teeth, cry get upset and then the cops come..... :D:D

When I think of urban survival, I think "weapon". All legal considerations aside, I think the Benchmade Infidel OTF auto would be useful. But I'd use the 44 first if I could.

That's brilliant - I can just picture me in Canada. Nice big custom made bastard sword strapped to my back. If 'twas legal here, I would never be without one!

Hell, if we don't exercise our rights, we might lose them before we can!

:D

opinel #7? most of my "urban surviving" involves trying to eat. no one looks sideways at that after the brunton folding Ti spork comes out.
SOG mini-topo for boxes, and such, has a nice red monkey fist lanyard
SOG trident folder (tiger stripe combo, looking to replace with polished plain) general purpose, and has the line cutter for the "rescue tool" argument
LM Pulse, pretty much everything else. although I'm thinking that I should add a small pry to my EDC pack, as I already carry a C-wrench for work (stage lighting) it would just be another trade tool.

I havn't had time to read all of the posts, but my personal preference would be a folder and my searches found several knives that are somewhat reasonable in price and high in ability. Aside from my favorite Victorinox Trekker, my preference for a single blade survivial knife would be Spyderco Manix, Spyderco Military, Benchmade Ritter Grip and the Benchmade Griptillian.

I used to work very closely with law enforcement. I can tell you that most great cops are so pissed every year when state legislatures, county and city councils start passing the laws and then they go into effect on such-and-such a date. They have "charging books" that are several inches thick, these huge three ring binders. They are supposed to stay ahead of the mound of shit that gets heaped on them each and every year.

Ignorance of the law might not be an excuse, it is also the definition of a tyranny when your own enforcers of the law are paid to know the law and they can keep up with the scribblers of nonsense. How in the hell can the common Citizen be expected to keep up with every single piece of law being passed when the police can't?

It's all about money, there isn't an ounce of "public safety" involved.

As far as all laws regarding weapons are concerned, you could literally get rid of 100% of them and crime might spike for a year or two. Sure, you'd have a lot of dead bodies lying around in the street for six months, but the place would be a hell of a lot cleaner and much safer after the first year because every idiot and criminal in the world that thought the revocation of all the weapons laws was going to be a cornucopia for them would find out the situation was quite the opposite.
