Urban Survival Scenario 2 (Son of Coldwoods thread)

Good point, Rupestris. Throughout history, sales of alcohol have gone up when times are stressful. I'll bet SHTF scenarios will make alcoholics out of a few people ;)

But...it's another tradeable item.

I don't know if I'd want to trade off alcohol. Traditionally, alcohol has been the key that ignites the fires of hate and actions that wouldn't normally have occured without the false courage that alcohol gives the drunk. Drunks make some really stupid decisions and one of them might be to come and get you and yours.

I was talking to my sons, wifes mother who is bulgarian. They are in constant need and live on survival conditions all the time. One of the most valuable commodities that can be traded for anything is cooking oil. Make sure you have an ample supply for cooking.

There was a scenario like that in a comic book i read. Batman: no man land. it is almost the same as this there was even a gang war.

To fight against the cold what about moving all the matresses at home into the basement to line the floor, walls... leave a space where your stuff which can be place and a space so that a fire can be light without burning everything. The small window can be use as a look-out point/a way to change for fresh air cuz carbon monoxide can build up in the enclosed space.

AS guns are not allowed in Singapore, weapons can be improvise eg, flammable liquids in a can can be change into a flame thrower, ash tray can be use as a solid weapon, use your imagination!

As for sanarity, double bag everything in plastic bags or do it in a can and save them to use as wepons!! no one would want to have a stinking poop, urine and what not thrown at them!!! :D

p.s last point was a joke execpt for the double bagging part. It is the same as doing it in the wild where you need to do it all in the plastic bag.

Alchohol certainly could/would be a barter item. You would have to weigh the ethics and dangers associated. Cigarettes would also be in high demand.
As the "No electric" scenario continued, We would be in a 3rd world Goods&Services economy in no time.

If you have some "goods" , you will be able to barter. If you can offer Survival services, you will also be able to trade and barter. Knife sharpening? Quilt making (from old clothes and material).
Any type of skilled manual labor would come in handy. Less-skilled labor may be in demand (digging holes, chopping wood) , but there will be a lot of people standing around with thumbs in their pockets, so, there could be a large unskilled workforce.
Computer programmers and white collar workers that never have done any manual labor find themselves just a a little less useful in this scenario.

Goods: Alchohol, cigarettes, cooking oil. flour, sugar, Salt, (food in general) firewood, extra blankets, gasoline, etc etc. Knives! you have extar knives that would fetch a good barter price! Spare outdoor grill?
Once the propane is exhausted, the gas grill can be gutted and used as a wood burning cooker.

Services:
-Water Gathering (setting up someones gutters to catch rain), or even barter your surplus.
-Knife & Tool sharpening, general shade tree mechanical stuff.
-Heaters: You have some simple sheet metal tools, and can handcraft wood heaters out of duct woork and sheet metal.
-Bicycle repair! People will take to bicycles for simple transportation, but they will have flat tires and such, and need tune-ups.
-Protection: Neighborhood protection, if you are armed and can take care of thigs, the neighborhood could chip in for your services, though, it will take at least 3 or 4 able bodies and minds to work shifts patrolling the entrances to your neighborhood.
-Carpentry & Woodworking: people will eventually need things repaired around their houses.

Also, this tidbit came to mind: Some people will naturally just up and leave.
(If there is a way out).
Within 24 to 48 hours of their departure, what happens?
Most likely, eventually, their places will be ransacked, pillaged for evrything useful. Less fortunate or displaced people may move into the vacant residences. along with their kinfolk and extended families.
