USA only Sales

What is this?

Just because you got frustrated and had a little pissy fit doesn't mean sellers have to make accommodations for you. Sellers pay to sell here, and therefore have the right to list their stuff however they want. This thread is worthless.
You've sadly mistaken constructive criticism for "pissy fit".

Its fair enough to ask for short and informative ads, but its really up to the seller how they want to organize things.

I don't know the numbers, but I get the impression that the majority of members here are in the US, and most do not want to deal with the hassle and stress of shipping out of the country. I'm sure at least some of them don't put "US sales only" in their ads because they don't even think about international buyers. If you're new to selling online its an easily overlooked detail.

A tip for international buyers: put at least your country in the location field of your profile. That way sellers can see immediately where you're from when you post in their thread and decide if they want to ship to you. That helps you avoid those awkward "oh you're not in the US, sorry..." types of PM's.

For the record, I do ship internationally on a case by case basis.

I agree with all of that. I don't list my location but I immediately contact a seller to make them aware and offer to pay for additional expenses. Some agree, some don't and all is good.

It's the posts where people clearly are aware and state "US only" at the end of a rambling post that I find uncourteous. They absolutely have a right to do it and I think I have the right to point it out.

GPH, take a deep breath. Come on over to the US and grab a seat. Our government lets anyone in. You can order all the knives you want. ;)

Simply keep typing the guys who are selling and I'm sure if you take the risk and agree to pay via "gift" and assume all responsibility for the shipping once it leaves the US more members will sell to you.

I personally have had an active trade deal with a fine member from Canada since May of this year. I traded him and his package got to me in a week. My package to him has been hijacked by Canadian Customs since May. One of the knives was made in Canada and Customs deemed it a dangerous weapon. The other knife is a Sebenza. It was deemed a dangerous weapon as well. Both knives are sold in Canada, but since it came from the US its dangerous?

I now only ship to the US, unless buyer wants to take all the risks.

People also shy away from dealing with members who don't post locations. I know I do.

RecalcitrantAmerican, thanks for the invite. I visit the US often. Will probably be in upstate New York in 2 weeks.

I hope no one is taking this as anti US. I'm dual citizen Scottish Canadian and I revere the wisdom of the American founding fathers. This is perhaps my favourite quote of all time:

"Man once surrendering his reason, has no remaining guard against absurdities the most monstrous, and like a ship without rudder, is the sport of every wind." - Jefferson.

If you are ever in Los Angeles shoot me an email. Be glad to show a fellow Scottish brother around.

Until we can figure how to deal with all these damn Customs regulations in our nations we are screwed my friend. I think your request is a reasonable one. I can do that in my sales threads from now on.

Thank you

I'll sell a knife to you as well. Now that we know each other. I know it must be frustrating to see all these knives for sale only to get rejected at the end. Let me know if I can be of any help locating US knives. I am serious.

Thank you for your generous offer.

I would not like to see a US only forum. It would only suggest to people that there is a problem inherent in shipping internationally. Done properly, there are very few problems. But that kind of forum would just scare off more sellers.

Frankly, anyone unsure of shipping outside the US should go to the FEEDBACK / GBU page and read the stickies! We have a tremendous amount of information on how to do it right and avoid the most common mistakes.

This will open up new sales opportunities. :)

You have the right to refuse to sell to anyone without explanation. I will ship outside the US if the buyer is willing to pay the shipping difference for priority international. Most outside the US will contact you if they're interested in an item for sale.
There's no need to right a slew of payment and shipping disclosures.

I agree that it would be good to read upfront US ONLY or NO INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING. Being in DPO, I feel the pain -- I have to smile when some seller with animated US flag .gifs and patriotic(/xenophobic) slogans all over his sig line refuses to ship to DPO. It's technically domestic shipping, costs the same, is trackable and insurable as any other domestic package, and travels under US military escort to a recipient with active security clearance who didn't receive their clearance by screwing people on the internet over $75 pocketknives. :-)

You won't ship to Hawaii or Alaska...?

I will if it goes by truck!!!:D:D

Of course I will as well as Canada. I just put CONUS for ease of typing.

If it helps the OP I will put CONUSTOINCLUDEHAWAIIANDALASKAASWELLASCANADA!!!:D:p

That would help.
I always state in the ad that I ship to all 50 states and MOST countries. No China, Russia, Greece, Iran or the former easter block countries that I can't spell the names of! :D
I got burned by a buyer in Russia and Greece.

Are all of these people crooks? Of course not. Its just the hassle and loss has made me shy of shipping to these countries.

CONUS, a term used by DOD, GSA, and the National Weather Service, refers to the 48 contiguous states. When a shipper states "CONUS ONLY" that person is stating that he does not ship to Hawaii and Alaska, only the Continental United States. Otherwise the shipper would say USA only. Yes? Simple. This is the U.S. Sellers can ship wherever they choose. Isn't it great?
