Use of a $300 Knife?

Different tools for different jobs. You could skin a deer with a piece of broken glass but a skinning knife will do it better. Some knives are purchased for the sole purpose as a collector piece.

Because of "fit and finish" and "edge retention" and not "made in taiwan".

This.

Because no matter were I am I usually have 2 tools on me. A knife and the other one just makes a hole. I might as well have a good one.

This thread should stay on the front page since the topic comes up weekly it seems. And it's the same discussion on every forum on every topic on the internet. Knives, flashlights, guns, cars, tools, home audio, car audio, TVs, cell phones, kitchen utensils... you name it.

In EVERYTHING in life there's the cheap, the expensive, and the middle ground. In EVERYTHING in life there's a point of diminishing returns. In EVERYTHING in life there are those who are unable or unwilling to buy anything but the cheap. There are those who splurge on extravagance because they can and want too, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. And then there's those that find the knee in the curve of quality over cost, the bang for the buck crowd that gets a quality item for a price that reflects it.

What's astounding is that the majority of threads in this vain are of the first type, trolling the second. The middle of the road crowd understands the thought process of their flanking sides. I don't claim to know the psychological motivations of these people, but its like clockwork. Unless it's a specialized forum where only the higher tiers of product are being discussed, there will always be a thread of the nature 'My X does the same job as your Y for 10% of the cost'. No kidding. For the most part, you might be right. They might perform the same task, but companies don't stay in business by charging 10x the price for the EXACT same item.

I should open a forum for nothing but discussion of cheap crap so the majority of the world can gloat about their thrifty superiority.

I'll sign up for a membership number in your CCC sub-forum :D We can look down our noses at those jerks buying Sebbies and XM-18's while our CCC folders slice string just as good!

It is all about the owner or buyer. There is definitely a point of dimishing returns with a knife relative to basic use issues. Some people like expensive stuff and are willing to spend the money to own it. I have yet to spend $300 on a pocket knife, but I'm slowly moving in that direction. But honestly, I will still carry a SAK (+ the $300 knife) because I like SAKs and know that there are times that I use a knife for things I shouldn't because that is the only "tool" I have with me. At least for now, SAKs are pretty easy to replace if you damage one beyond the point you are comfortable carrying it. But I really dislike wasting things or abusing things.

I have passed the $300 mark on fixed blades a long time ago.

yea but try opening one handed. aside from one or 2 sak models. or having to stab with a sak slip joint can be tricky even in cardboard. the screw driver on my old sak is twisted because it doesnt even have as good a temper as most of my regular screwdrivers. i wont slam u because you have a sak i do too. but cant tell other people what they can or cant buy and use. its not even a great example in this comparison, slip joint vs locking folders or expensive folders. what were really comparing is volkswagons and ferrari.

hahaha.
pretty much the sole reason I carry the climber is the absolute improbability I am handing someone the Hinderer that's in the other pocket.

This reply alone should be read by every single person here that has a gripe, opinion or plain comment about anything discussed here. Thank you for this Gallonfuel. IMHO the only people who ever bring this up are those that are envious or jealous that there are people who have things that they do not. I never here anyone say, "I really wish I bough that fantasy knife at that last truck stop we passed and you can have my Chris Reeve". I have cheap knives, I have really good knives. I don't have really expensive knives because I can't afford them. Except my Hortons' of course.
