Use of a $300 Knife?

I pried a trunk open with a Strider SMF once. I doubt a Gerber would have survived that one.

I carry AND use all of the knives that I own. The knives with the more "fragile" handle materials (MOP, stag, etc) will be used but for less obnoxious tasks than the ones with CF/G10/titanium handles but all get used on at least a semi-daily basis. All of my knives have been taken to work where I constantly use a knife, including a $700 Anso custom. My Striders, an SMF and NM SLCC get used even harder. If I own it I want to enjoy owning it which means using it. Could I get by using under $100 knives, sure, would I enjoy using them as much...probably not. But thats me and its going to differ for everyone. I also wear a $1600 Breitling watch and carry a $300 flashlight with me everyday. Knife makers, watch makers, flashlight makers all put a lot of time and effort into putting a well constructed product on the market to be used and if we don't use them like the maker intended we're shortchanging ourselves and slighting the maker.

In all honesty, a knife is more than a tool for me. I often take out my daily carry and enjoy holding it and feeling its edges, taking it to carve up some fruit etc. Sometimes I just like to look my edc over for new scratches or to see if it needs to be sharpened. My knife is my daily companion and I care for it as such. Sure I could just carry a SAK and I do sometimes along with my favorite blades, but it will never have the same appeal to me.

Thalestin I'm the same exact way! And original person I can put my xm 18 through a trucks hood if I wanted too a sak wont do that....

If you factor in the life expectancy of a quality knife, they are actually very reasonably priced. If a $600 knife gives you 20 years of solid use, it was well worth the price.

I've carried and used knives in the $600 - $800 range. I've also carried far less expensive blades. It just depends on my mood.

Unless it's exceptionally rare or historic, use it. You can always buy another.

To each his own. A friend bought a $1200 Leica binocular. (10 years ago. They are twice that now) He said that he couldn't afford a Rolls Royce, but he could afford that quality in a binocular. I know some folks who think that those $10 Chinese binoculars are just fine. My watch is a $7 Casio. My boss wears a $3000 Rolex. My Casio is more accurate and reliable. He carries an old crappy knife of some sort. I carry a small Sebenza. Why would anyone spend thousands of dollars on a custom rifle when a $500 Savage is just as reliable and maybe more accurate? It all depends on your personal values.

Carrying this one today. It's flat grind and thin profile makes it a cutter that is a pleasure to use and it was made by a friend whose contributions here add a lot to our community.

Does it do anything more than an SAK can do. No, but I enjoy using it a lot more than wider bladed knives and it was made by someone I respect.

I sometimes carry and use knives that are worth well over 1000. I drive a 15 y.o Buick that gets me to work with A.C. in the summer and heat in the winter. That old Buick will get me to work like a new fancy car. :D. It is just a matter of what we enjoy as individuals.

But what will those expensive knives do that a SAK will not do except give you the joy of ownership? The SAK will cut boxes and tighten screws. while I doubt any of you use your knives for that purpose.

Thanks,
Jerry

You keep asking and answering your own question Jerry. I stopped reading on page 1.

Here's absolute proof of what a more expensive knife will do that a SAK won't do kay? :)

I agree that my SAK won't do that. I'll have to remember next time I want to tear down an old house.:) Sorry you went to all that trouble just for me.:):)

OP- i totally understand your "basics" opinion on knives. however, this is a forum dedicated to knives and such. your question is like going to a automotive forum and saying "why you folks buy a $50k high performance car? my 1980 yugo was only $2k!!! it goes from point A to B just like your expensive chit!"

as knife nuts, most of us have many knives made of various steels and such along with basic brands and models. some collect. some use. some flip. i'd say we do a little of each.

bottom line is buy what you want.

PS- i started with 1 or 2 knives. now i have too many!
PSS- this thread needs some pron

You did ask what more expensive knives can do that your SAK can't. You were given an answer. Why the sarcasm? Didn't expect more capability?

It wouldn't have to be that expensive but it would be more than a SAK. I am sure the Zt 302 is a strong knife but I am sure that a coldsteel recon 1 priced at about 60$ can do the same thing not to mention the bigger CS folders.

Yeh, I'm sure it can but you will have a bit better edge retention on the ZT 301.

Oh yeh, and you were challenging some rich guy to do something like that video to his knife. Maybe we should see a vid of those spartans and recon 1's doing that.

You mean other than the videos that coldsteel already makes? And the ones by Andrew demko? There are a lot of videos of those knives doing tough things all together. Even one buy a forum member.

Nope, I mean a parallel of that ZT 301 vid. In the same order as that. ;)

I'm sure that those tri-ads can do those prying things, it just would be fun to watch it and post it side by side.

Ever notice that you turn any hard use thread into a tri-ad discussion? Hmmm, I wonder what that's called.
