do you guys think having a club in the wilderness would have any good uses? i can see a hammer for driving stakes into the ground and you could use it for batoning. what other uses are there for a club in the wilderness?

I don't see much of a purpose if you are just out hiking or car camping. But if you are in a survival situation a throwing stick aka club is a must have item.

The only use I can imagine for a clublike item is for use as a throwing stick.

For your described uses, any fallen branch or hunk of wood would work.

Are you thinking for defense?

protection from attacking indians or bigfoot maybe. psycologically i always feel better with something in hand with some heft. i dont know what could be in the ocean that could eat a great white but i am not sure there isnt something. the woods are big and dark to

even with a gun or a knife there just seems to be something more substantial or visceral about a good club.

Well along with batoning, they`re good for trapping too. Snares don`t nessesarily kill animals.....they just detain them in one place until you return. My Dad ran a trapline during the Depression and said a small club was they easiest way to kill anything that was still alive when he checked his traps. Just use it to break the nose and most small animals like muskrats and possum will bleed out. Heft is reassuring, but Dad always said he used a long stick about as big around as his thumb.

I would think a simple walking stick would be about right. Then you could also use it to check brush for snakes, or to get turtles with.

Hornbeam makes for a very strong hiking stick/staff. Don't make it too long, about as high as the lower rib. I once used mine to clobber a pit bull that was attacking our corgi. It ruined the pits day.

Maybe if that girl in Georga had one and a little bit of wits about her, she could have clobbered Gary Hilton. Lots of advantage to having something that you can keep right in your hand all the time without arousing anyones suspision.

As a kid we used to pick up (or unscrew) those big nuts that held the tracks together on the train tracks and screw them onto a green stick. These were used while trapping back before we could carry our .22's. Mac

I'm all for clubs in the wilderness as long as they are not members only....oh yeah and no neon signs !!!

LOL.
I can't get the image of the caveman dragging the cave woman by the hair with his big club in his hand.

Maybe not a club so much, but a stout walking stick or staff is good. Any solid stick can be used to pound tent stakes or baton. A walking stick can be used to push thorns or spider webs aside, check for snakes, and oh yeah, help you keep your balance on rough terrain. If anyone or anything threatening comes along you already have a weapon in your hand.

As a kid I knew a park ranger who always carried a heavy walking stick he called his 'rabbiting stick'. Over the years he got a few for the pot with it!
