User Custom Knives?

There are some knives that are just true masterpeices but honestly my favorite knife to make for someone is a kitchen knife cause i know it will get used ALOT!

I have quite a few customs that I use, and take much pleasure from them. The vast majority of my custom knives I do not use, but I take much pleasure from them as well.

Most customs are meant to be used and most customs sell for $90 to $300. I would also note that most knives can be made to look almost new again by the maker or another knife maker.

I use mine...

Andrew Demko... $680

I agree with everything Coop has said,,,, BTW Coop, after you took that picture of my knives at last years Blade Show,, I sold ALL of the knives in the picture! One even going overseas! Thanks again for your photo quality! ..... My comment:

Anytime one of my knives is sold to a "collector" I hardly ever sell a second one to him. When I sell a knife to a "user",,, he will return and buy another and another. I have some "users" who have bought close to a dozen each of my knives, some to use, some to give as gifts for hunting "favors" ect. It just seems "collectors" never get to appreciate the full quality of a custom knife. I do make both collectors and users, I guess in the end it's the customers choice, "Cash is King"...Jon <sharpdecisionknives.com"

i have used about 60% of my custom knives. some are used daily, like the kitchen knives, some from time to time, some were used once or twice. most of the drawer queens are not really functional ("art knives"), price or scarcity is of minor importance.

some like to keep their knives clean and mint, others like to use them, and both are right. luckily, the world of custom knives is big enough for both parties!

below is a pictures of all custom knives that i have used, shot maybe a year or so ago.

best regards,
hans

Hans, you have great taste in knives! That BF hunter- do you still have that? Or do I have it now? I see you have a Goo BMG too : )
Awesome!

thanks lorien! i have never sold a knife, so all the BFs i got are still mine. btw, i am expecting a custom thing pretty soon, you'll see, not knife related, but made of steel of course, that might interest you. it has kept me busy for a year, so i haven't had too much time for knives lately. but you can't have it all!

best regards,
hans

so funny, the Foster hunter I have is exactly the same as yours, right down to the 3 ns pins and oak handle!
Can't wait to see what you've got in the works bro!

That's one reason I like forge finished blades - they can be used without easily damaging their finish. If they rust or get stained, 150 grit sandpaper makes 'em look like they did when they were new! :)

That and aesthetics.

So they are definitely using blades, even if their lines are also sculptural.

Coop - you said it better than most! Many of us see it the same way you do, but just cannot express ourselves that well. Thanks. Not only is beauty in the eyes of the beholder, but so is the definition of use - scraping paint off of the bottom of your boat with a Ron Lake folder, or covering a hole in the wall of your outhouse with the Mona Lisa just doesn't make any sense. I have used many different customs to field dress deer and small game. Some worked better than factory blades, but many did not. Some customs I use for cutting, and some I USE for art!

I think if it's a custom with good steel for what you want to use it for, and is custom moreso in the made by a custom maker sense rather than intricate ivory, engravings, and inlays with a more fancy than practical sheath.. then yeah use it. If its just custom made but designed to be used, then use it. its a knife.
You dont get a piece of art then hide it in your attic in a box, you put it up and let it get some sun damage so you can look at it. Same thing.. let it be a knife :D

if its designed to be looked at, then let it be looked at.

Awesome collection Hans.

Lorien - you got that Foster hunter from me ya goofball. I know well that Hans doesn't sell his knives - I have tried to pry that Cashen ivory camp knife from his clutches, to no avail.
