Uses for neck knives? (fng question)

Don't have one yet but it'll be here this week. Hopefully another on it's way soon that I'm working out as a trade. Got a Rekat Fang coming Tuesday and currently working on a BM Nimravus Cub in a trade.

Reasons:

1. They're too cool and on-scale "inexpensive" not to own.

2. I want mine for mountainbiking, fishing, hiking or any other time I may wear shorts that do not have a pocket to clip a knife into. I have the proverbial "spare tire" and don't like going IWB.

3. There are times when I'm doing number 2 (is that a pun??) and don't want to use my $150+ pocket/clip knife for a given duty, why not relegate it to a $20 to $90 neck knife?

4. Did I mention that they're too cool not to own?

i used to carry both a crkt and a cuda arc-lite.
both of them just got anyying to carry,so now i switch between a little Ogg Chainsaw Damascus necker, and a Cooper wharncliff necker.these are about the only two i can stand to wear, the cords/chains on the others just buggered the hell out of me.
the stiff kiss, while a good throwing knife

isn't all that spectacular.i stil carry mine every once in a while, but the multi-position sheath isnt.the belt loop is narrow, very narrow.buy one and see. its not too difficult to change carry positions, but with the belt loop being the way it is,it just didnt cut it for me.

i will recommend both,if you dont mind the cord around your neck (like i said, its just plain annoying to me).
both are a good value, and both sell for around 20 bucks.pick one.

Wow, you have to cut it out of yourself? You're a pretty gutsy guy, either that or really constipated!

If its digging you refer to, why not carry along a little compact folding shovel. Very light, and just the thing you need.

Actually, I keep the small folding shovel for #2. I find it's much better and the edge is not quite as dangerous..

Well, there are times I want to cut under water, dig, cut small branches via spine whack etc.. and just can't bear the thought of doing some of it with an expensive knife. (I know, then why carry it?)

Besides, what would people think if they saw me flying by on my mountain bike sporting my new neck shovel?

I do use a neck knife for self defence and utility carry. In Canada, the law about "concealed weapon" is complex and problematic. But that's another post, or two.
My indispensible use for a neck knife is for kayaking when I'm in the high arctic and have to wear a survival suit rather than a PFD. I got used to it so now I usually wear one even if I have a pfd [it's normal to lash a small river knife to the pfd]. To minimize bouncing around, the neck knife is tucked under the pfd and my lanyard runs beneath for access.
My neck knife of choice for this is a Neil Blackwood [Dr. Lathe] talonite beauty. He made me up two sheaths so one can be dedicated to neck wear and one can be used for belt carry, lashing to a pack etc, without having to make adjustments in the field with frozen hands. I'm ordering a similar stellite knife from him to lash to my pfd which may eliminate the neck knife when I wear a pfd, or move it off my neck when I'm in the canoe or kayak unless I'm wearing a survival suit. Too much info?
Neck knives are IMHO are very useful and sometimes the best way to carry, but unless you wear them tucked in or use an extra cord or strap they tend to swing around when you move. My $.02[Can.}
