Using expensive knives

I have only started to use the only custom knife that I own. I had it made back in 2002 and only now am I starting to use it. It took me some time to bring myself to use it but I get very little enjoyment just looking at it in my drawer.

enjoy them however you like. use them or don't use them, its your money and your knife.

i enjoy buying and carrying expensive and inexpensive knives.

i also enjoy simply owning them.

If it looks like it would be too pretty for me to use, I don't buy it. I beat the crap outta my knives. One of the main reasons I stick to Striders. They come to ya looking pretty rough, and if you beat them senseless, they don't seem to mind. I get the Safe Queen thing. Just not my style ; )

Er, the way I figure it: I'd buy a good knife because I'd rather use a good knife than a crappy one. Better knives usually (not always) are more expensive than crappy knives; ergo....

I have no restrictions against using any of the blades I buy. They are ment to be used. I have to try them anyway to actually feel if I like them. One thing I do have a problem with though is to sell a knife that is in my possesion already. Even if I don`t like it I have found it to be hard to let it go. Maybe I`m just weird though.

The knives I use the hardest are my most expensive ones. They include a Hinderer XM18, Large and small Sebenzas, and an Umnumzaan. Each one has a few scuffs but even better. I have no fear of using them hard simply because of of solid the knives are and I trust them.

I think there are two camps: expensive knife users and expensive knife hoarders. I am a member of the latter camp. The most money I ever spent on a single knife is $300. That's not a lot to some but it is to me. I just can't bear to carry that knife for fear of losing it. Since I've come to this realization I've refocused and now purchase more inexpensive knives. I'm much happier because I have no qualms about using and carrying this class of cutlery. It also allows me to buy more knives for the same money. I think you have to find what works for you.

It's kind of ironic that the overwhelming majority of replies routinely appearing in these 'user vs. safe-queen' threads encourage the OP to "use it, Bro'! Life isn't a rehearsal," and yet the majority of knives being offered in the Exchange are "new in box - never used, carried or sharpened."

Humm...

I can relate!

My Custom was $250, if I remember correctly back in 2002, and just in the last few weeks I have started to use it.

I'm constantly patting my pocket to ensure that it is still there. I'm sure over time I'll become less worried about it. The truth is that I have not lost a knife so why should this one be any different?

I DO get a lot of enjoyment using my Keith Coleman Custom! It reminds me of when I visited him to order the knife!

Here's a close up picture of my Hinderer after the 2nd week. Paid $575 and have been using it on a daily basis for everything. Now granted the scuffs are very light but it is not a safe queen. It is more fun to actually use a great knife.

Hi all. First post here on bladeforums.com. I've migrated from the other forum devoted to sharp pointy things. W/o getting into too much detail (unless someone asks for it) I just wasn't happy with the way it was run.

I think there's a happy medium between safe queens and hard use. I use my knives that are on the expensive (for me, anyway) side, but I don't use them as prybars or to dig up rocks from the ground.

Nice to be here.

I'll use the hell out of my fancy schmancy Koster. He didn't put a cool powder-coat on it so it could sit on a shelf looking pretty.

i won't abuse it though. I have a Scallion (that's missing 1/4" off the tip) for that.

The only knives I don't use much are the customs that are really art pieces, and for some reason or other are irreplacable.

Anything I could get again, even customs, I use. I may not used them hard but I do use them.

Great point, although im sure the ones using their high end knives aren't selling them!

I used to be a big safe queen bearer and still have a few. After selling 90% of the Safe Queens I picked up a couple CRKs. I have been using my Sebenzas on the daily.

First thing I did with my Brand New Small Seb 21 was rip up some card board and took it to work for the night. Quick fix to avoid that "I don't wanna use her" feeling.

With a couple of exceptions, if I own them, I use them. Such is the greatest compliment I can pay to the designer and manufacturer.

No problem here using the good stuff. Life is too short not to. The notion of a highly useful wallhanger is is oxymoronic.

I used to pamper my better knives but got frustrated having them in the draw.
To make it easier, I carry a cheaper knife to do the really dirty work....like an Izula,SAK or Opinel. Can't stand cutting something when the follow through is going towards rock or steel...leave that for an Opinel!
