I know a lot of people on this forum frown upon the use of knives for battoning, which is fine, however I still find it easier to obtain small kindling battoning a knife than using my axe !
Anyway for those who do like to Batton, here are a few pics...

I usually use my MOD4 as it has a longer blade, with my DM I am limited to 3"-4" Dia wood......

In this last pic you can just make out a knot in the wood just above my knife, I just smashed my knife through this and there was zero damage to the edge......

So to be honest, the shorter length blade of my Mutt ain't the best for this work but it easily gets you by if you have no other option !!!

I don't really carry any knife, except for folders, that can't be batoned. Since I generally do not carry an axe or a saw, and rely on a mid sized knife for everything, it definitely needs to be stout. Doing it properly won't really hurt a knife anyway.

LOL ! that is why I mentioned that ;) when is it due ...Chopweiler that is :D

It's sat in bedroom closet all nestled up in cardboard and bubblewrap !!!

It's gonna be my birthday pressie from the wife so I have to wait till mid-May for it !!!:(

The mutt didn't do too bad of a job on that wood.

pssssssss who disapproves of battoning? There's a reason we love our big greasy knives, it's so we can beat the hell out of them!

He sure has got a good wife and I never let him forget it!!! He doesn't know what colour he's got, so it's a surprise. I'm sure they'll be pics of it shortly after his B/Day!

I'm glad you enjoy the posts bro, always good to hear !!!!
You might catch us using an axe, as on the grass in this pic of my son using a bow drill but I'll be honest it is very rare that I use a folder other than a SAK as I prefer my fixed blades !

darn it, and here I thought I was gonna see Pit riding Maisy around the hills!

I luv batoning with my DM! because I know it can take it and you can really give it shot.

I don't think batoning is really that tough on a blade. Maybe blasting through knots is and requires a tougher knife, but it is really amazing at how a thin blade can go through wood batoning.

I haven't exactly tried my rapala fillet knife batoning yet, but I bet it could with a little care and attention!

Hey pitdog,

Good picture of your son. I assume he's just fooling around with the bow drill in the picture?
