USPS Rate Hike

Tho't I'd post here as a heads up. I've not been overly concerned about the Postal Rate Commission's decision to hike the first class mail rate by a penny. However, it seems that the media has'nt told us "the whole story". I received a knife today shipped to me via USPS Priority, shipping cost billed at $4.00. I elected to return the piece in same packaging, same box etc. etc. via USPS Priority mail. The PO price today, under the new rate guidelines, was $9.10!!! That's more than double for the same box to the same address on the same day. The PO clerk confirmed that indeed the prices had "more than doubled" and that the PO had nothing to do with it and were in fact in the process of filing a grievance with the PRC, which for us uninformed folk, is a congressionally appointed group, not the Post Office. She advised a "letter to your congressman" as a recourse. Funny, somehow FedEX and UPS are looking more and more attractive.

We often think that when we have completed our study of "one", we know all about "two", because "one and one is two". We forget that we still have to make a study of "and".

I just checked the USPS website for the rate changes. The Priority Mail cost has increased from $3.20 to $3.50. Delivery confirmation has increased from $0.35 to $0.40. Insurance costs have gone up slightly as well. For a custom knife sent Priority Mail with delivery confirmation and $425 worth of insurance, the old rates would have totaled $9.15. The new rates total $9.90. I'm not sure what doubled in price, but it wasn't the Priority Mail (+9%), delivery confirmation (+14%), or insurance costs (+7%).

I simply reported the facts as presented to me by my local PO and as confirmed on their computer. I'm aware of the USPS website numbers and when I challanged the PO w/ same, got the above reported response. My post is simply a "heads up" so that others might be aware that something ain't "kosher", at least in my neck of the woods. The pkg in question is approx. 24"x15"x8", weighed in under 2 lbs, carried $200 insurance and was shipped by an outfit contracted to USPS.

i was at the post office today and happened to check out the new rate hikes and senator is reporting them correctly as they were also posted in my local post office for all to see...sounds like the clerk in your local post office is screwing up somehow or their computer has been misprogrammed....i tried to get a money order but couldnt at that particular branch because the cost of money orders actually went down five cents to 75 cents and the local programmer screwed up and forgot to reduce the price on these so the clerks wouldnt sell me a money order for 80 cents even when i told them to keep the extra nickle....our tax dollars at work and paying frigging morons to run things....they should have had all the bugs knocked out by today as they knew about the rate changes for some time now.....feverdoc

FYI, here's an excerpt from the USPS site: "The new cost of mailing a two pound Priority Mail package increases to $3.95, although a new one pound rate is now also available at $3.50."

Hi Revmic,
From the sound of the numbers you've mentioned, is it possible that your sender didn't insure it but just sent priority with tracking? The difference in the 2 prices might be the insurance.

I don't know about you guys, but I just love it when Kelly does numerical calculations with percentages.....heheheh.
