Hi Everybody,

We are moving to Utah this summer

.

Any info on anything will be helpful.
Houses, restaurants, housing, good areas and fellow hogs that live there.
Please e-mail me with any info, I am a little nervous as I have lived in AZ for 20 some odd years and Nancy has her whole life.
If anyone in UT is tired of the snow and wants to live in beautiful Tucson, I will trade my house for yours :)

It has been a long time coming but looks like it is finally happening.
Although we love AZ and all of our friends here, we have wanted to have more than 2 seasons (hot and kind of hot) and trees in our life for a while now.
Nancy applied for a job at Utah Valley University and got hired on the spot, last week.
She will start next school year (august) so we will be moving June/July.
with her being part of the faculty tuition will be free for our family :) I may go back to school part time and get a degree.
She also will be close enough so that she can follow her dream of singing in the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

Tearing down the shop will be hard but doable.

No need to worry, the shop will only be down for a week or two, I can still work on a skeleton shop like I did when I started 13 years ago  It will be hard but only for a week while I set up my shop.

Now that we are empty nesters it will be interesting :)

Wish us luck and thank you for any info/advice.

Dave

Hey David,

I live in Salt Lake City.

I would recommend KSL.com which is a local news company website as a resource in the classifieds section for buy/sell renting, and houses for sale. I buy and sell on it all the time and its my alternative to ebay for local, bulky, and lower value items for trade.

We've recently opened our new City Creek center which was the only enclosed shopping mall to open in the country in 2012 and features retractable glass ceilings that open and close depending on the weather. Good mall shopping if thats your or your wife's thing.

Food:

Burgers - Smashburger - a chain, but one of the most juicy and flavorful patties I've ever had
Lucky 13 - a bar, which also has specialty 1/2 and 1/3 pound burgers - excellent.

Mexican:
Red Iguana, and Red Iguana II (so popular with lines out the door every day, they opened a second one two blocks away!) Mexican with a Mayan/Aztec influence in the menu, world class moles featured on Diners Dives and Drive Ins. Best salsa I've had - and try the killer nachos, a meal for two!
La Frontera - authentic 'local joint' plain, hot, good salsa. Popular for their smothered burritos, I usually get the ground beef enchiladas. They drown their plates in cheese and sauce.

Moochies - best philly cheesesteak in the state, featured on Diners Dives and Drive ins

Takashi - best Japanese in the state

Tea Rose Diner - most authentic Thai food with curry that has heat ratings of 0-10. They will only let a first time diner try up to a level 4, a level 2 heat makes me sweat profusely. They also do good classic american cuisine from ultimate omelettes to bacon burgers

Este Pizza - authentic new york thin slice pizza, order by the slice and be in and out for lunch - if you get a whole pizza or delivered you'll lose the crisp crust
Pie Pizza - U of Utah local joint, dine in the basement 'dungeon' thick hearty crust and gobs of cheese. When you order a pepperoni they put a layer of cheese, then pepperoni, then cover all the pepperoni with cheese again and it looks like a cheese pizza! Great ranch.

If steak is your thing I'd recommend Ruby River, a good value. I love the prime rib. If you want to impress your wife try Christophers or Flemings

Dim sum, Golden dragon

Oh, my favorite lunch value is Kyoto where you can get Tonkatsu on a bed of tempura veggies, miso, salad, rice, and green tea for $7.95 in a sit-down japanese style restaurant!

I'm sure more to add - I'm still waking up!

Good luck Dave and congratulations to you and your wife!
Moving is a challenge, my house closed last month, going through 25 years of stuff, sorting, keeping, selling, tossing or giving away was probably the hardest thing I have done in my life.
Most everything I have is in storage, while I build my home in So. Utah.
Sounds like you'll be up in the Northern part of the state, wish I could help you with info/advise, other than get rid of anything you don't need, it will make unpacking easier;)

Good luck!!!

I am envious of the move. Been wishing to do the same and get out of Louisiana!!!!

Dave, Good Luck Brother!!! Amie and I are heading back to the Lower 48 in about 36 months. Lot to plan for ain't it.

Yaay. You made my day

I cant wait, and if you need help with unpacking or just anything. I and I'm sure a bunch of other guys here would be willing to help. :)

I may go back to school part time and get a degree.

That's awesome Dave. I went back to school after the military, and I'm working on my degree now. It can be tough, but def is rewarding, and nothing beats free college! I've only drove through Utah, but it was easily the best scenery on the north route. Also, as Sqchram pointed out, I too have heard great things about smashburger... though I've never had the pleasure.

Moving to SLC in Utah from NYC is my long term goal. One day it will happen

Happy travels and re-location thoughts for you and your wife!
I'm not familiar with the area, but I wish you both well on this new adventure.
