Valentines day Backpack! (pic heavy)

Nice trip. And no wonder she's smiling - she was only carrying half of what you were. I guess she's not a big follower of women's lib.

:P thanks for the observation. The idea was to make it so comfy for her that she'll want to go again. If I could have packed an aero bed and the two person sleeping bag, it would have been there ;)

Appreciate all the nice things you are saying about her. She has the dental board exams coming up soon and this will help de-stress her.

Great pics! Thanks for sharing. Looks like a great way to spend "together" time. Unfortunately my significant and patient other will not go "camping" unless it is to an area with hot and cold running water, shower, indoor heated toilet facilities, tv, and internet with good cell reception and catered meals. I love her anyway lol.

..when I read the title "valentines day backpack", I was really expecting a backpack full of motion lotions, silicone "objects", and divorce papers..

..my little lady would never be happy out there like that.

..which is exactly the way I like it. ;)

When I backpack with my lady I skip the wine and bring the equivalent weight in condoms....

;)

You hit the nail. I missed this very important aspect on the first times we went out backpaking/hiking. She wanted to carry her own stuff exactly like I did and well... I let her do so. When my buddies and me go climbing or something, we carry a spare for the two or three of us (spare gloves, spare sunglasses, etc). But with my gf I packed a spare for EACH one of us. We ended up with quite heavy daypacks. I also screwed up badly when I tried to do pretty much the same hike than I usually did with my pals and getting sort of frustrated when we took twice as much time and had to stop half a docen times. It was all my fault for not noticing she wasn't as fit, experienced or determined (very important) as my pals. Now we are going out hiking again but I am very carefull to pack "smart". Packs might be of the same size, but I let her take the puffy bulky light stuff like non-compresed down jackets, shells, and alike. I get the crampons, ice axes, snow-shoes, most of the water and the food. The more she enjoys it, the less reticent she will be to go again. We are also doing hikes that we would consider just a morning wake up hike before the real deal (ice climbing, alpine route or multiday hike). I try to keep it easy and we don't go out if weather is not near perfect (nothing like hiking in the middle of a snow storm to be sleeping in the couch for two weeks straight...).

BTW, I just noticed you were hauling two sets of footwear... now that's overkill!! :D :D

Hey Mikel, I didn't bring 2 sets. The others were left in the car. She had some cheap walmart flip flops but that is about it :) Overkill was the 6 knives I brought

Muchas gracias for looking!

Agreed :D:D:D

The more I go out, the less knives I carry... and I read BF a lot! Something is going wrong... that's for sure. Need to have it checked. Going out without four or five pounds of steel can not be healthy by any means. :D

Great pics Joe. Looks like you had a stellar time. That area is gorgeous!!!

What a lovely lady you have there man. Chicks that backpack are hot.

I have the same softshell as you. I love mine.

Good work Joe,

She IS a cutie - make sure you keep her! I agree on making her comfortable too. I missed that point the first few times - luckily my wife liked to camp already. Cool pictures and it looks like you had a great time!

I think though that Joe didn't mention his knife - because he had his woman carry his mora around her neck. That way - when he needed his blade he had to rummage around in he shirt for his knife! That guy is ALWAYS thinking! ;)

You always post some great pics of your excellent journeys joe! Thanks and keep em coming!

Nice trip Joe. Man, that wilderness looks mighty fine and what a perfect way to enjoy it than with your sig. other! Pretty soon, she'll be the one begging you for time on the trails and that is the best situation!

I wasn't able to be with my wife on valentines or her birthday. I envy how you were able to handle your valentines day. Good show!

That's awesome. I usually carry the lions share of gear too, otherwise my wife would not enjoy the hike, which in turn would make me not enjoy it! But that looks like a Valentines day that all of us would have preffered.

Funny story about packing gear for your girl... Before the wife and I were married we went on a backpacking trip down into the Grand Canyon. Macho me, decides I'll carry most of the weight #1 to show off and #2 to lighten the load so she'll want to go again. By the time we made it to the camp site for the first night I was damn near a heat stroke and the next day the load was much more evenly distributed! :D

Great pics and trip report Joe! She is a keeper for sure man.

Yet another awesome camp site. With the numerous campsites in the area, I think this calls for a get together.

Let's go!

Wow!! You're my hero.

Seriously, though, awesome pics, and you're lucky to be with a lady that shares your passions  It looked pretty ideal way to spend valentines day, man: great sights, great sites, and a great woman to share it all with. :)
