I'm looking for a fixed blade with a synthetic or kydex sheath that locks or straps the handle to the sheath so that there is no chance of it flying out at inappropriate moments, but still easy enough to get to in case of emergencies. Even though I almost always carry a folder for day-to-day business and a few fixed blades when I know I'm going to play in the woods, I'd like something stout enough to be a "survival" knife if something happened on a long trip and I didn't have anything else. Something that could preform well as a bug-out blade in case of emergencies where going home isn't a possibility. I'd prefer it to be carbon steel but not very expensive in case it ever gets stolen. I imagine this last requirement will knock out any of the custom blades. I suppose my best chance would be one of the military style blades. The primary requirement is that it locks/latches/straps to the sheath with little to no chance of coming out. Everything else is secondary.

Buck 119 from Wally World 39.99. I keep a Mora in the car, but it seems you want something more substantial. I have toyed with teh idea of putting my Glock knife in the car, but it's edge retention leave a bit to be desired.

I keep a stainless steel Swedish Army Mora in my car (along with a multi-tool, folder, saw, shovel, axe, etc.). I went with stainless as I wanted it to be maintenance-free, plus the stainless used in this knife is easy to touch up with a ceramic rod. If you want a carbon blade the 780 TriFlex is very durable, gets scary sharp, is easy to sharpen and costs next to nothing. The sheaths on both of these are fairly secure, or you can get one of our local Kydex benders to make one for only twice the price of the knife, but well worth it. The usual sources for these and other Moraas are Ben's Backwoods, Ragweed Forge, and Smokey Mountain Knifeworks.

My vehicle blade is my Condor Combat Axe. It's small, tough, fairly cheap, has a snap sheath and very versatile as both a utility piece and SD piece. Here's a crappy pic of mine. Since this pic was taken, I have wrapped the handle between the wood scales and head with 550 paracord too.

Billy...is that an m43 I spy? I love mine. All of these are great options, but don't have the kind of retainer sheath I'm looking for. Thanks for the replies though!

The Glok is a fine choice for a field knife. Also the Cold Steel SRK is a great high carbon blade that is tough as nails. Forgot to add, the SRK has retention of the kydex sheath as well as a snapping strap retention on the belt loop. They can be had for around 50-75 bucks.

I do know heat in a car can relax kydex at the worst heat time during the summer here.

Maybe an AG Russell deer hunter? VG10 or D2 steel, 4" blade, rock solid retention with an active thumb release required to pull from the sheath.

For the money the Glock Field Knife is hard to beat. Especially if it will see some abuse. I wouldn't put it up against a MORA in functionality but in durability it wins hands down. I have also seen them for as little as $21.00 on websites.

Oooo, I like the looks of that Deer Hunter in D2. Can anyone comment on it?

Sorry to say, I'm in the same boat. I've been wanting one for a while and it's only ~ $60, but... well too many knives, too little money. I'd be interested in owner's comments as well!

Nutnfancy did a review of a smaller knife (3" blade) with the same sheath design - the bird & trout knife. Here's a link to that review:

There are some viewer comments about a D2 deer hunter, but not much more than great knife, bigger blade & handle works better, light saber sharp... that kind of thing.

If you get one, I'll be jealous!

I think I'm going to settle on that one. Size/shape look good to me and that sheath looks to be just what I wanted. I'll be sure to do a review when I get one next month.

I use a Gerber Big Rock for the same purpose- $30 or less online if you look around. I kept one in my motorcycle bag for two years of occasional hard use and still going strong. It is 440a and I have a little corrosion on the blade, but mostly due to me just not taking good care of this knife. It does have snap closure on the sheath. It is 4.5" blade and just over 9" OAL but still fits in my Explorer glovebox in the sheath.

I keep 2 knives in my vehicle that fit your requirements. Becker BK-7 from Camillus (now made and sold by KABAR), that has the original nylon sheath and a Frost stainless 760 with an aftermarket kydex sheath. Also keep a Fiskars hatchet and a short handled double bit axe behind the seat.

I keep a Busse Battle Mistress in my car- just in case. If you're in a car and you suddenly need a knife, you NEED a KNIFE- which means something big and beastly. Before I discovered Busse, I carried and used a Ka-Bar "cutlass/ machete" for several years, and it worked like a champion.

I've been eye-balling the Deer Hunter for a couple of years and read an interesting review on the 3 different steels here: http://www.cutleryscience.com/reviews/deerhunters.html

Convinced me to go with the VG10 when and if I finally buy one. The ultra-thin handles are a big turn off, although these knives weigh little so may be a good ultralight option. The blades are very thin, too, so it may depend on what your end use is, if this is the right knife for you.
