Vehicle Pack Thread: What else do I need?

Surprised no one has said this yet... You need some kind of Vehicle. I'd suggest something along the lines of a Uni-mog, or maybe a HUMVEE...

I had assumed Guyon already had a Smart Car to store the pack in, whether or not he fit in after the pack is his problem.

In my dreams...

I used to be a mechanic so I think in terms of things that the vehicle might need. When I leave town I always take a good toolbox with me although I now have a relatively low mileage car so I don't normally carry the tools around town. I also always carry jumper cables and a 12V tire pump. A tow chain or tow strap would also be a good thing to carry. I also carry several good flashlights.

I am rarely away from civilization so I don't need more elaborate survival stuff, but when on trips I do. More elaborate transportation-related gear would include tire chains and a shovel. Human survival gear would include food, at least energy bars, and some water as well as blankets if you were anticipating travel in cold climates. I like to go to remote places in Utah and if I was doing so by myself, these days I would probably invest in a satellite phone. Many years ago when I was single I did a lot of that but this was before the cellphone days, some places a cellphone is enough but some places it isn't.

I drive 40,000 miles some years. I have kept a pack in the car for years. Here's what gets used the most for me or my family:

  • Excedrin/Advil
  • Water
  • Flashlight
  • Band-Aids
  • Gallon Zip-Lock Bags (used to put ice in for soccer injuries to my kids)
  • Duct tape (been needed several times).
  • Bandages and neosporin (once for me (dog bite), once for one of my kids (fall with bad abrasions)
  • Jumper Cables
  • Blanket lined with nylon on one side (stadium blanket)
  • Hat & suncreen (when I find myself outdoors unexpectedly.)
  • Money/credit card - hand if you lose or forget your wallet somewhere.

I have never needed the tools (except for tire tools), fire extinguisher, toilet paper, matches/fire kit, or most of the first aid stuff, but it is nice to know it is there. I used to carry a Becker Tac Tool til I broke it chopping wood. No I have a Vic Craftsman in the console and whatever I have in my pocket at the time. Need to replace the Tac Tool, though.

I think we need to know more about this. Do you have pics? Was it Ka-Bar Camillus or what?

For me, I have also added in my car kit..

Emergency Suture Kit (after needing it and not having it, used super glue)
4 Tampons (don't laugh..good for bad wounds, filtering water sediment b4 a tab, kindling)
Small oval flask of whiskey (many uses)
12" Duct tape (wrapped around the flask)
2 Pair of white cotton socks
6 Zip ties (2 large, 2 medium, 2 small)
2 Ibuprofen 800mg
