Venev Ursa Set vs Centaur Set

If one wanted to add a strop, what would be a good grit to use? It looks like the 1200 Venev stone is around 3 micron, so 1 micron paste?
I use a 1 micron diamond emulsion as my main stropping compound. For my use it refines the edge nicely, but that's just my experience.

I don't always go to the 1200 grit either. Even the 800 grit gives a nice finish(it is equivalent to about 2000-2500 grit in JIS or Naniwa stones)

Ok so I got home assembled everything and clamped in a knife. Since I am still deciding about the Venev stones, I decided to use my KME diamonds.

The stone holder were driving me crazy. The stone kept popping out. Is there a trick or correct method to keep it locked in there? It seem self explanatory but just doesn’t seem to be designed to fit a flat end stone. I wasn’t using a lot of pressure either.

I was only on the first stone and it slid out out so many times that I just stopped completely. I can see how the edge pro stones would fit perfectly with the notches, but how do you secure any other type of stone?
Use more pressure on the stone to hold it in place that's what the spring on the guide rod is for, with the dual sided stones I find they stay in place better then the edge pro stones with less pressure because there is more contact area.

If your just sharpening standard grinds I would return the narrow stones for the 1 inch wide stones as they will last longer and most likely cut faster as there is more contact area.

Reread this entire thread last night especially post 11 and went back to sharpen and stone was still falling out.

When the stone is locked into place, how much tension should there be on the spring? I watched a ton of different videos and I don’t believe I ever seen that covered.

Also I contacted Gritomatic yesterday regarding possibly exchanging the stones and still no response and it’s been almost been 24 hours.

Maybe I should just buy the Centaurs and keep the Ursas too.

I don't have one of those systems, so i cannot help you with regard to that unit, but on my unit you can feel the tension when placing the stone in the holder, they don't lock into place like an Edge - Pro stone, but sit tight enough to hold into place. Sorry i cannot help you anymore.

What unit do you have?

With the Hapstone, you can adjust the holder to accommodate the different lengths of the stones. If I remember correctly, the edge pro had a fixed position for the edge pro stones.

I made my own unit. The Edge-Pro is fixed position, but it is still adjustable in that it has a spring behind the stone holder and between the handle, that gives you the tension to hold the stones securely.

When I had the edge pro the spring was an accessory for convenience for changing stones.

With the Hapstone, it also has a spring but the opposite end can slide up and down the rod to adjust for different lengths of stones. I need to experiment more when I get home tonight.

I thought that end piece had a screw in it to tighten it for that very reason, but as i said i don't own one, i thought i had seen it on Youtube video review.

It does have a screw to tighten down. So my question to 777 Edge 777 Edge would be how much tension on the spring should I have when the top portion set properly? You obviously want tension with the spring to keep it secure, but I also don’t want to have too much tension to where the spring is compressed down all time.

For non-backed stones like Ursa, Centaur and your KME stones, as much as possible tension. Let the spring compress almost all the way, leaving just enough space for the last bit of compression to be able to remove the stone again when progressing.

This is what I was waiting for! Thanks! I definitely didn’t have the spring super compressed.

Besides my user error issue, I been liking everything else so far. Everything looks and feels top notch. That fine tuning adapter is a dream come true…along with the specific areas for the angle cube!…haha

Only thing I think I I’ll miss on the KME is the ability to spin/rotate the top half of the sharpener. But I’m sure as time goes on, I will forget about it.

The KME sits on a rod that is also connected to the base. You hold on the grip as your sharpen. As the sharpener sits on the rod, you can rotate/swivel the entire part that sits on the rod.

Just like how a barber swivels the chair when cutting your hair.

Got ya'.   Now you have one more job my friend, get yourself an angle cube, and don't skimp, the cheap ones are cheap for a reason, talking from experience.

I’ve had an angle cube for almost 10 years and just recently got another one. That’s why I was saying earlier that the fine tuning adapter + the spots designated for the angle cube are dreams come true!…haha

You're all set then.   :)

I just need figure out my stones situation and I’ll be good.

777 Edge 777 Edge I have one last request. I know the ratings for the Venev uses the FEPA-F rating correct? I’ve always used the KME Diamonds and Shapton Glass stones.

Can you give us a estimation of the grits for each of the Ursa/Centaur stones? I have seen the chart before but wanted to hear your opinion. I also want to save it to my notes so I can always refer to it if needed:

Venev
80F =
150F =
240F =
400F =
800F =
1200F =

Thanks!
