Friend Mike came over to the boss' shop today to make up a forge, I suggested we go vertical and also since we were making one why not make 2? Mike had some good pieces of thick wall pipe, I took the 6" and he took 8". Angled the burner inlet/holder, 1/4" base plates (legs later). Will line with wool then satanite over that. I have a Hones Buzzer burner, a commercially made burner I will use.

I built a vertical forge a while ago for welding. I had been using a horizontal forge for the same process, and I cannot believe how much better the vertical is. The flux falls away into a pile of cat litter I have at the bottom of the forge. The heat over the billet is even, and the thing is hot, hot, hot! However, it does not throw as much heat in the shop as the horizontal forge did. I used to forge with the horizontal and the shop would get up to about 110 degrees, now it hovers around 80 or 90. I guess I am saying that you will love it.

Nice and simple! You wouldn't have a few WIP pics would you? I have been gathering all the info I need to make a vertical propane forge for a while now.

Matt, not much in the way of a how to, it's pretty much cut two holes across from each other for the doors, one hold down low for the burner, then make a lid.

That looks really cool Sam. I did a search on the burners you mentioned. How was yours designed? The ones I saw started at $800 bucks or better.
I've been working on my forge for like two weeks and you bang two out it one day.:eek::)

I guess I had better buckle down and get an OA torch and welder. You're obviously having way to much fun with yours ;)

Cheers

i banged out two in one half day LOL. Torch and welder are a must.

Matt, get the torch setup, get a real one that way it's torch and welder in one!

Don thanks! Yeah it's little, 6" ID with 1" wool makes for a 4" inner chamber, perfect for light bladesmithing and welding.

Sam, it's 1.5". Been using this one for 13 years and it's by far the best I've used for large damascus billets. Work great for heat treating also.

Just right for a bird house !! I don't see the length ,did I miss something ?

I made my last one with a piece on 14" industrial stainless chimney. 2" thick with a stuffing of rockwool between two .025 tubes of stainless. I the put in an inch of wool covered with satanite and ITC 100. worked great and only weighed about thirty pounds. When I relined it with castable and it now weighs like 150 lbs. takes longer to heat up and don't get any hotter than it used to.
