Mark, Dave did a fantastic job. I didn't get to see the piece at Blade. I'm sure your are just as happy with this one especially with having input on the walrus. I like the story about finding the right piece of walrus. Great way for you to break into Bowies. Look forward to seeing the sheath that Mr Long is making for you.

One additional thing I'd like to mention is Dave's approach to working with a client. He is very professorial. Instead of just saying this is how I'm going to do it, he seems to enjoy the process of teaching. For example, with the ivory he carefully explained to me why each piece would not work, what he needed to do with it to make it fit and balance also capture the beauty. Contrary to my earlier post, he didn't just say "too small." He taught me what I wanted to look for, how the core effected what he could do with it, and how much material he needed on top, bottom and both ends for the project. He also sent me examples of blade styles, Damascus patterns, and not only shared his opinion but asked mine. We talked about butt caps and balance. The WIP he posted here is a good example of Dave's willingness to share his knowledge. Overall it was an excellent and rewarding experience, the end result of which was a beautiful knife. I learned through the process.

Any chance we could see more of your mad photobucket skills and get a picture of your modified round file you used on the ivory?

yes I could do that but I am about to head off to install a railing so it will need to be later today but I will show some stuff from the file

I love watching other people's processes. Thanks for the insight into your beautiful work.

As always, beautiful work Dave !

For those who don"t already know this, Dave is a great teacher. I've been to a couple hammer-ins at his shop, and made a "shop rat" knife under his tutelage....well, it was probably more of a "shop rat-like" object....:p

Always great to see how great craftsmen work, and this is no exception

Thanks again everyone. Bill I am looking forward to having you in the shop again. Mark thanks for the kind words, this project has been a lot of fun, now that I have read back over my post and there is at least one or two oops's, I will do better next time. Now for a shot of those files

and ya it is not all fun and knives sometimes I am out putting in the blacksmith stuff

I do not do as much as I use to but i enjoy a fun job like this one from time to time.

here are those index blocks I want to make sure if you use them you get what I was saying about flipping them

so you see how I have marks like the B on one of them that lets me know when I am drilling that this side needs to go to the butt cap so the other side goes to the ivory or stag or wood, you get it. Thanks again to all who joined in.

Knives are commodities for me, all to often. Posts like this bring me the needed appreciation for the skills.

Thank you. Just super. I love the methodology.

I lucked out. By the time I told Dave to ship directly to Paul Long to was too late. He had already dropped it off addressed to me. So, I did get to see and hold it, if only briefly, before sending it off to Paul for the sheath. It's even nicer in person than in Dave (or my) photos.

Congratulations Mark, you've got yourself one beautiful knife there.

Dave, great WIP showing some rock solid construction techniques. I've got a whole mess of safe edge files but none like those. Time to build some along with the butt plate drill guides. Fantastic work my friend.

That is a beautiful knife. I love smaller gambler's or vest pocket bowies. Congrats Mark!

Dave, thank you for the WIP and all the pics. I know that takes a lot of time.

I like posts like this. They are beneficial to the maker, collector and whole knife community alike.

Thanks again.

Thanks Mark, Mike, John, Kevin Joe, and all the folks that chimed in on this I am looking forward to seeing what Paul dose with it
