Vest Pocket Gamblers Dagger

Despite the questionable name designation...I don't think it would look as good with a double edged blade.:D

I wholely agree. I thought I may catch some flack but this blade profile screams dagger to me. Besides my cheap dictionary doesnt mention "double edge" under "dagger"

It's a bowie.:D

You may be right. Is there a book somewhere that has catagories and descriptions for knife types?
Seriously my Thorndike-Barnhart desk dictionary says: "a small weapon with a short pointed blade, used for stabbing". I should check what Webster says.

dag·ger
Pronunciation:
\ˈda-gər\
Function:
noun
Etymology:
Middle English
Date:
14th century

1: a sharp pointed knife for stabbing 2 a: something that resembles a dagger b: a character † used as a reference mark or to indicate a death date

Jay Fisher's website states:

"The current and prevalent definition of a dagger is a double-edged knife that is isometric in relationship to its axis. In simple terms, the word dagger refers to knives that have symmetrical double edged blades, and usually have symmetrical handles."

Can we agree on this, or do I have to dig deeper?

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

I wholeheartedly agree that Mr. Bump has made one fine looking pointy object that would function very well if needed to stab someone! And it sure is nice to look at.

I do not posess the knowledge of the esteemed Mr. Garsson, but if I were shown that pointed object, "a dagger" would seem an appropriate designation....or even a bayonet would not be unreasonable.:D

I look at that knife, I see a dagger. But mostly I see a stunning bit of craftsmanship - and THAT is what I find captivating.

Roger

I don't think anyone's going to get hauled off to knife jail for calling it a Dagger. ;)
However, I don't see anything that resembles my interpretation of a Bowie.

If we CAN'T call it a Dagger, than I opt for Fighter.

tomeeto...tomato.....poteeto.....potato.....Bowie...fighter.....dagger....I don't care I just call it BEAUTIFUL;):thumbup::D

I dont even feel qualified to comment on it.. Im absolutely awe struck... Your style isnt up my alley, but your work is the absolute pinnacle of our hobby.. Cant wait to see the next one..

not just the pinnacle of a Collector's hobby, but the pinnacle of the Art of the craftsman in particular. It is really an AMAZING knife, to my eye at least.
If I already said something like that, I'm sayin it again only because I believe it bears repeating.

Maybe I have made a knife that has no catagory. It doesnt seem to fit anywhere. My pistol knives have the same trouble. You should see the looks I get when I tell strangers what I do for a living.

I think you produce clearly historically influenced pieces, even if they are not historically accurate, if that makes any sense....a seamless blend of the vintage and the modern, if you will.(feel free to use that one your business cards if you like):D

I simply would have called it a ring dirk, and left it at that....as the others have pointed out, you can call it whatever you want.

It's STILL a bowie.:p

The Gambler who carries it aboard the river boat will probably refer to as "My Toothpick"

Just had to come back and revisit this one, Bruce you are a true talent.
Looking forward to seeing the next B. Bump master piece. ;)

I think I'm going to go with STeven on this one and put it on my home page as a "Gamblers Ring Dirk". I like that. Thankyou STeven.

Thanks gentlemen for the all the compliments!
