VG-1? New Cold Steels

The Ak47 is goofy looking- and has what looks to be a knock off Axis lock and Wave.

"Cold Steal" :jerkit:

For someone who participates in every Cold Steel thread just to diss them, you seem to spend a lot of time involving yourself with something you say you don't like.

The AK knife looks a lot better (to me) than either the Emerson or Boker interpretations, but I am afraid, if the materials are any good, that it will be priced way out of my range ($0 - $120).

P.S. I keep clicking on that link again and again, that knife is absolutely stunning.

The Sisu needs a guard:grumpy: and I will make one when I get my fingers on that baby:D Cool looking knife.

Pretty much a copy of the Hackman puukko of years ago, not that CS does that sort of thing -- much -- on Tuesdays.

Yeah it's an ugly knife. So what? It's not like we didn't know that CS had an Axis knock off. So does Spyderco.
But personally, I think the AK47 looks like a United Cutlery piece.

BUT SOMEONE TELL ME WHAT VG-1 IS!!!!!!!!1

And what's with that Brooklyn Smasher, a polycarbonate baseball bat?

I want to start designing for Cold Steel. My first product would be the 'Drunken Dentist' - a heavy, sharp-edged polycarbonate ashtray designed to be flung, shuriken-like, through crowded bars, thus clearing a path to the lavatory.

Followed up by 'The Humiliator' - a polycarbonate trashcan designed to be lifted overhead and flung onto the prostrate body of your vanquished opponent as he lies face-down in a urine-soaked alley.

I've got copyright on these, Thompson.

As one of the apparently few who likes CS I am glad to see some new products from them, some nicer than others. As for the " unholy " Grivory knives they work great for stashing in the shower and outdoors for last ditch defense. They may not be made to last through multiple " uses " but for a one shot all I have at hand I think they will get the job done. I agree that walking stick looks interesting, especially since finding a nice Blackthorn stick has proven tricky, anyone know of a good internet outlet for Blackthorn or Purple Heart sticks/canes?

Went to the Cold Steel site - body piercing jewelry - oops, not knives - U.K. stuff - cool though.

The new stuff isn't on the knife site.

Where did you get the VG-1 from? The only place I see it concerns the San Mai KONJOI.

Maybe it is the new San Mai.

The AK-47 folder is priced at $100.00 MSRP, and I have found it at two online dealers for about $60.00 so far. I can't believe that they put that obvious of a Wave-opener on it!

I don't see how they will get away with this. But Spyderco was successful in working out a deal with Emerson to use the wave on the Endura and Delica versions that are due shortly.

I recall seeing a discussion of the VG-series of steels a while ago: It turns out there there are 10 types, the lowest starting at VG-1 and the highest being VG-10.

I mentioned in another thread that Cold Steel is supposed to be paying Benchmade for the fact that the Ultra-Lock is so close to the Benchmade Axis lock. I saw a thread a few years ago on the Benchmade.com forum from the president of Benchmade that said this.

Yep, Cold Steel pays a licensing fee to Benchmade to use the Ultra-Lock because it was too similar to the Axis Lock.

Not buying any new Cold Steel, but I get shivers looking at that shamshir and the san mai Talwar folder (ambi-clipped lockback with a thumb-opener that doesn't get in the way when cutting or sharpening. Oh wait, that's why I'm a Spyderco addict! ;) ).

It gets me that they had to rip off Tighe. They obviously have enough talent to make tons of great designs.

Yep and apparently the only reason CS pays that fee to BM is because they were basically told they had to or face a severe penalty. Apparently Ernie Emerson is going to have to go that same route and twist LT's arm some while clearing his throat to get the proper royalty paid to him for the blatant theft of his Wave. I have spoken with Ernie about this just last month and not one contact has even been attempted by CS to get permission to use the patented Wave feature on either the Talwar, Ak47 or the Ti Lite. All of these are not only Waveable knives but the first two are getting into the really blatant slap in the face type of theft of intellectual property by the add on Waves incorporated into the thumb discs. LT is really a POS in my opinion.

Anyone have a cold steel sword?
If so what do you think of the steel.

I have their Warrior Katana. The blade is well done. Deep bo-hi gives very audible feedback. The geometry is wonderful for mat cutting. I do have a few beefs with it, though. The steel is softer than most other companies for katana, so it doesn't hold it's edge as well. Still, this is only something you will notice with an un-checked cut. Second, the handle is far too small for a blade that size. Just swinging it a couple times real makes you remember where your forearms are.
Right now, my katana is out having a new handle made.

I think this is the case

Fallkniven has in their regular series laminated VG10. This is VG10 between 420j2
But in their Kronor series they have 3G: Super Gold Powder Steel (SGPS) and sides of VG2.

So in the Kronor series the VG2 replaces the 420j and probably means it shares some of the essential caracteristics which are importand for side slabs.

so does that mean VG1 is 1/10th as good as VG10? Or is it more like the difference between AUS 4 and AUS 8?
Doesn't seem very impressive in either case.

I don't know what laminate cold steel uses these days?
In the past it was AUS8 between 420.
I suppose it's in this case AUS8 between VG1?

Maybe to let it sound more exotic :p

Again, I don't know

As has been said "There is nothing new under the sun." Some designs are going to look similar...of course my opinion is probably a product of not knowing enough about high end and custom makers models
