Good day,Im hoping to get some input on VG10 steel. Looking at the Spyderco steel specs sheets on their website it looks like a winner. The one aspect i couldent find was the manufacturer does anyone know this? After reading through all the testing results that i could find, this steel doesnt seem to be rated that high in edge retention. Thanks for any of your input.

I prefer VG-10 over any other stainless. Edge retention is excellent, there don't appear to be as many issues for manufacturers with heat treat, easy to sharpen and maintain and you can run reasonably acute edges without chipping or other problems. I would choose Spyderco's VG-10 over their S30V without hesitation.

I have quite a few VG-10 knives including four Fallknivens with the laminated blades (VG-10 core). All are great performers that take and hold an excellent edge.

VG10 IS GREAT STEEL.I use my endura all day for misc cutting,I have to say I like s30v a little bit better.

VG-10 is an awesome steel, I would reccommend it to anyone.

As far as the manufacutere, I am not sure, although I am pretty sure that it is a Jappanese steel.

I would but it on par with S30V.

I love VG10. It's edge retention is good and it strops easily so it can be brought back between sharpenings. I also agree that I like Spyderco's VG10 better than their S30V. It's easier to sharpen and seems to take a keener edge when highly polished.

One of the best stainless steels out there. Very fine grained, takes a very sharp edge and finishes nicely. Abrasion resistance is not as high as S30V but edgeholding is not only a function of abrasion resistance. Is run reasonably hard. Not the toughest steel (but which stainless is?), but as laminate is used successfully in larger blades.

After S30V taking a hit, VG-10 is probably the best loved stainless steel on these forums today.

The advantage with Spyderco is really that you never have to worry about the steel really. If it is used in a Spyderco it will be an excellent steel.

I know it was a steel designed for pruning japanese trees but I don't know which company makes it. Could be Hitachi, but I am not sure on that.

I have a Mcusta and 2 Browning Ice Storm knives with VG10 blades. They can be sharpened to a smooth razor edge and hold the edge very well.

What is the average grain size in microns?
I see that statement made repeatedly, and have yet to see anything to back it up, nor have I been able to find any documentation, anywhere reflecting grain size in VG-10.

Hi Brenr,

VG-10 was originally developed by the Japanese foundry, Takefu, for grafting plants.

Spyderco introduced the steel to the market with our Moran model many years ago. Initial lab testing proved to be very good, but we always like "real world" testing before final decisions are made.

We are currently testing ZDP-189, a powdered metal made by Hitachi. Again, lab testing was very good and currently "real world" testing is in progress.

H-1 is another steel that tested well in the lab and is in the marketplace with a number of Spyderco models, with more on the way.

VG-10 edge retention is quite good. It is currently our primary Japanese steel.

I really appreciate the great response i have received from everyone, what a great forum. Thanks to everone. Mike.

I am on the fence about VG-10. I usually use 440C and sometimes S30V, and thought that I would be happy with VG-10 as an in the middle steel. I was splicing wire for a field phone the other day and my Delica's edge was all chipped up. It took me about 20 minutes on the Sparpmaker to get the edge back again. For me, not being able to make more than one splice on a wire can be bad when I need to make many to run comm line. Of course I would use wire clippers in combat to do these chores, but to return to where I was going with this, 440C and S30V have performed better in the past for this chore. For other stuff it is ok though.

USAFSP,

You actually used a knife to cut field phone wire? The one with steel in it?

I think I would chose the Leatherman or similar.

I prefer VG10 over S30V and many other steels like 154CM or ATS34. I've found it to be a very good edge keeper for me but it isn't that factor that keeps me liking it. I like the way it touches up so easy and gets that near factory biting edge. Its a super steel as far as I'm concerned and is probably my second favorite stainless right behind BG42 steel. Neither of them have me hooked like D2 though. That is my all around favorite even if it isn't technically stainless it is the most stainless of the non stainless steels and has never given me much in the way of problems with rust like other high carbon steels have.

Based on what I have seen it is based on ease of sharpening mainly and the final edge sharpness. This is likely skewed by comparing Spyderco vs Benchmade, but guys with high standards for sharpness and a lot of skill in sharpening tend to prefer VG-10 over ATS-34 for sharpness/sharpening.

First off, welcome to bladeforums. Your newest addiction! We are here to promote it.

I love VG-10 steel. I haven't really read any of the other posts, but I prefer to many other "higher" quality steels. If you don't mind sharpening you knives (which you shouldn't now that you are officially a knife addict), then this is the perfect steel. Hold retention very well, won't chip, and a takes and edge with a bite that you wouldn't believe. In plain edge, still cuts through rope pretty smoothly.
