VG10 vs LamCos vs Elmax - toughness

When will Fallkniven get with the times? I want one of those stacked leather models, but would love something tougher than vg10. 3v, cruwear, m4, magnacut would all be better choices.

I get it, but for me, at the same time, i’ve never had a issue with vg10.
Its not that i dont use them either, i’ve done really stupid shit with them.

No chipping, no breaking, no rolling. Never.

Come to think of it, I’ve done some pretty stupid shit with my A1, held up perfectly.

Then again, it has a pretty steep convex grind..

I have things I would change about it but I don’t think there has ever been a better production belt knife made than the F1.

I love the design too, there is something about that full convex grind and the utility handle and sheath.

I love Fallkniven knives especially my volcano in LamCoS......
Hattori makes incredible knives.....How is Fallkniven going to fair once he's done making knives!
He's pushing 90 I believe +or - 2yrs.....I'm just curious because you know they have to have made some sort of plan....
Love Fallkniven knives......👍👍👍

I’d give my arm for a F1 in laminated Hap40 at 65hrc!! I doubt you will ever see them use those steels just due to where they are made.

Personally - I wouldn't take Fallkniven for toughness.

Out of 3 - I'd pick Elmax.

Given free choice I'd probs go with carbon steel.

Ichiro Hattori is 84 this year and still going strong. He has two apprentices of many years, Nobuaki Yamamoto and Ritsu Maruyama both of whom are very accomplished and now making and offering their knives under the Master's approval. Hopefully the Hattori shop will continue into the future. His relationship with Peter Hjortberger started in the mid 80s and production in 1997.

Thanks for the info!!!! Appreciate it...

A well known American knife maker has said multiple times that the japanese crew came to him to learn the convex grind..

No way Hattori didnt know how to do that.
LOL...I remember. Mike pretty much got laughed off the forum with that obvious BS.
But I can tell you that he told me personally how much he respected Ichiro Hattori and his "beautiful grinds".

Question to FK AB:

Hi,

How would you rank YOUR steels VG10 - VGWolf - LamCos(just the Cos) - Elmax in terms of toughness?

I'm not talking about the laminate, only the edges.

Thanx

Response:

Good VG10
Better VG10W
Best CoS/VG7
Superior Elmax

All these steels are very good steels and our field experience is quite positive. Yet I believe that the largest reason why an edge stays sharp and doesn't roll/doesn't crack is the shape of the edge. A convex edge is always the sharpest/strongest edge but of course you can make a thin convex edge or a thick convex edge, much depending on how you intend to use the knife. Or what kind of user you are.

And the key for field sharpening is the fine, flat, fresh diamond stone, why not the DC4? No knife is better than the stone you carry, because all knives, no matter the steel, will finally get dull. If we haven't had the diamond stones to sell, we shouldn't be able to sell these hi-end steel knives.

It's fairly easy to get focused on the steel but a knife is so much more complex than that. Not to forget about the sheath... And the price... And the design... And the reputation of the manufacturer...

Best regards

Peter Hjortberger

Is that not why they offer the LamCoS models?
