Not much difference in features here but which would you choose and the pros and cons of each. Man the shipping is getting to be a killer.

I just went through this. I got the farmer because of the saw.

Is the saw any good?

I carry a Soldier every day and have been thinking about getting a Farmer for the saw.

From what I've seen the Farmer has a fanatical, almost cult following among the "survival" types.

Gotta get me one.

The Electrician Plus has the saw as well but does not have the can opener, it has what appears to be a wire stripper in the place of the can opener.

I hear ya. Tried to mail anything odd-sized recently that didn't fit into those standard-sized USPS shipping boxes? A complete rip-off.

Fortuntately SMKW still has free shipping on any order over $100. They have an excellent SAK selection too.

The Electricians Plus has a saw too. Looks like the same saw as the Farmer.

The only difference I can see is that the Electricians Plus has an "Electricians Blade with Wire Scraper" (looks like a wharncliffe blade) and the Farmer has a "Can Opener with small screwdriver" instead.

Can opener might be nice to have in a survival situation. Having a straight-edge blade might come in handy too, and who goes camping with canned food anyway?

I don't dig second blades, so I went with the farmer in a recent decision. Small enough to be pocketable, enough important tools to be worth carrying, large enough to be effective for their respective tasks.

I'll post a review of it (and a couple of other new blades) if it ever gets shipped.

i carry a farmer every day.....every day....and though i may not use every day i feel better knowing that if i need to i have the ability do fell small trees and limb them with that saw...and yes i have used one to do just that.....it aint the best but by god it works better than alot of others.....

I have a Farmer, great knife and the saw works very well. udtjim, shoot me an e-mail .... mike.123850 at gmail dot com .... I can point you in the right direction for a Farmer if you're interested.

The Farmer has a hasp, while the Electrician does not. For me, this is an important feature for a survival knife. The hasp lets me tie the knife to my body. If it's not for survival use, I'd rather have the second, sheepfoot blade than a can opener.

I've used the saws on several vic's and wengers, and all of them perform very well, of course the larger locking models work the best but with a hiker, farmer etc it's no trouble to take down small saplings the size of your wrist, takes a minute or two but fully up to the job.:thumbup:

The saws work well for what they are.

I like the Fireman model as it is the larger size and has a saw and 2 blades for redundancy. It isn't a lightweight SAK however.

+1 - that's my thinking exactly. I'd prefer the second blade to the can opener but I have to be able to secure the knife against loss. My Farmer rides next to my billfold every day, secured by a lanyard looped through my belt loop.

Well I know we all hate it when someone offers an alternative to the suggested contrasts. I have been looking at a new SAK myself, concluded I liked the farmer alot and then hapened along this:

weningerranger51.jpg

Weninger Ranger Model 56: 3.9" Blade with safety lock; 4.2" double-cut wood saw; Phillips® head screwdriver; Patented locking screwdriver; Cap lifter; Wire stripper; Can opener; Reamer; Awl with sewing eye

It is about 2 x the price of the farmer. Depends if you really like that locking blade or not. Ergonomics look good too!

I prefer the Farmer model, and for reasons I've given several other times. No need to beat a dead horse here.

Talked me into a farmer.

Amazon has the red alox version on sale for $19.99 right now with free shipping if you spend $25 or more. I couldn't walk away:)

I have a farmer it's awesome the saw works great.....it's the type of knife that everytime I take it out of my pocket I just have to sigh and say yeah... that's awesome all the things you need in the woods with none of the b.s.. I recently took another workshop with John Mcaan from survival resources and he modded the can opener and bottle opener on his farmer into small chisels for carving.... neat for guys who like to carve...but not for me than I'd be out in the bush with no way to open my beer....

Just as an aside for those who might still be contemplating between the Electrician Plus and Farmer, that small electrician's blade is chisel ground. Which may or may not sway the decision making process. I personally carry a Farmer EDC and a Victorinox Ranger in my excursion bag, so the Farmer definitely gets a +1 from me.

I started an exact same thread over on edcf and ended up with the farmer. The only reason being my need for a can opener outweighed a second blade.

I use the can opener on my SAK quite a bit because the one I have in the kitchen is a POS.
