Vic Farmer or Electrician Plus

Just as an aside for those who might still be contemplating between the Electrician Plus and Farmer, that small electrician's blade is chisel ground.
Gautier

That is not totally true my friend- only the scallop is chisel ground, the flat of the blade is v ground. I just got a regular electrician for this blade over the can opener. And now you guys tell me there is a model with a saw- I think this would be my perfect small Vic survival knife as I doubt I would tie the knife to me as I have never left a deep pocket knife behind (belt carry and pocket clip yes). By the by how many of you have been in a survival situation (or semi-survival) and had a need for a can opener? Just curious as I have never needed one in the bush- but I rarely carry cans.

I went out to the Garage and looked through My SAK's I found one that has the Large blade, Small Blade, the openers, the saw, tooth pick and twezzers, cork screw and reamer. I don't know what it is called as I have had it for quite a few years. Will probably still get the Farmer or Hiker or Electrician Plus. I have an old electrician still in the box that I had forgetten about. Its gotta be 15 years old or so.

For all who want SAKs, try felinevet. Great prices and free shipping. There is a link to them on the SOSAK home page.

Look at the top left corner.

The other place I have bought them is SwissArmyKnifeShop.com. They cost more, but free shipping as well. I got my order, but was not especially excited about them.

The large 4 3/8" closed SAKs are similiar in price to the small ones, but are pretty heavy. The regular Trekker seems like a nice tool to take a look at. I had one and the saw worked well, but the screwdrivers were too polished.

The saw on the 3 1/2" closed models is about the same length as the one on the Leatherman new Wave. Just something to think about. It is considerably longer on the larger models...nearly as long as the knife is.

Just got my Red Alox Farmer, great quality knife for the money. I really love my Trekker & GAK, but the Farmer is definitely more pocketable. Also noticed the backspring is a lot stronger like I had seen mentioned.

I have been EDCing an Electrician Plus modded with a pocket clip for several weeks now. I really like the short utility blade on it. If it have a combo tool instead of a bottle opener, and a lanyard attachment, it would be just about perfect.

I think the saw is pretty good. For saplings, or notching. Good stuff.

Talked me into a farmer.

Amazon has the red alox version on sale for $19.99 right now with free shipping if you spend $25 or more. I couldn't walk away:)

Stephen

I just ordered the same red alox Farmer. Nice deal on that one.

A deciding factor for all may be simple enough. That small slotted screwdriver on the can opener is also a #2 phillips head screwdriver. Try it out and you'll see. I use mine all the time on my Soldier. Victorinox designed it that way and they use to press the issue harder in their knife sales. That can opener / screwdriver design is the brainchild of Victorinox and although Wenger also makes SAKs... when they supply Soldier models to the Swiss Government, it is stipulated in the contract that Wenger must use the Victorinox can opener / screwdriver combo tool on the Wenger knives. Check out all the Wenger models, only the Soldier has that Vic style tool.

The SAK Farmer is one of my all time favorites! I have been carrying a different SAK for about a year now because it was gifted to me by a friend and it has pretty much the same tools.

I don't know about cans in a survival situation, but I carry my SAK's everyday and you would be surprised how many times the can opener has been useful!!

It would be my luck in a survival situation to find some cans and not be able to get into them....:D

I vote for the FARMER....

The clip is from knifekits.com and Bill Evans aka Scibeer put it on for me. It is getting to be silly how much I have been carrying this knife lately. I am going to attempt to regrind the bottle opener into a combo tool.

I recently went for the electrician plus instead of the farmer. The second blade on the electrician plus can be sharpened into a wicked little razor sharp blade by putting a full convex on it with some wet and dry, it cuts like nothing i have known before. Well worth losing a tin opener for.

I'd suggest looking at the outrider.

Really, highly recommend the Outrider if you carry an SAK for a field knife.

The straight mounted phillips is great, the scissors are sweet (I love victorinox ambidextrous scissors!), the saw blade is just a BIT longer than normal and far more useful that you'd think that little bit of extra length would matter.

lockblade +1

and it's only a 4 layer, so it's comfortable to hold and nice to carry.

I only use the SAK can opener, bottle opener, and corkscrew at home, don't even bother trying to find what's in the the drawers for those purposes.

the phillips gets used at least twice a week, scissors daily, saw probably weekly.

I've carried an SAK since I was 8, and this is hands down my favorite out of dozens.

I went out to the Garage and looked through My SAK's I found one that has the Large blade, Small Blade, the openers, the saw, tooth pick and twezzers, cork screw and reamer. I don't know what it is called .

That's a "Camper" model.

I love the farmer for a lot of reasons. 1st is the alox scales. Secondly is that is has jsut the right amount of tools to be useful, but not so many that it looks like you are carrying 4 D cell batteries in your pocket. The saw works great, and it is an excellent all round utility knife.
