Hello Everyone,

This is going to be a progress log for my development of custom Victorinox scales. Hopefully I can tackle everything from wood burl to carbon fiber. I recently bought a larger cnc mill, so I'm completely setup for large production runs. Tonight is just the refining of the cad models. Here is what I've got so far.

I would be grateful for any input on this. Designs are very flexible, and I'm willing to do almost any material.

Hi CF

Are these for all the differant sized SAK's ?

Personally, would love a modded Vic Mini Champ .....

Any idea in prices etc ?

Hello Perfectionist (love that name)

Eventually I'll be doing all sizes, but right now it's only for the 91mm models. Prices will vary on material and complexity. I'm capable of doing custom engraving, enlaying, and various other things. I'm thinking $20 or so as a base price for a pair of exotic wood handles.

Hi Cold Fusion,

You mentioned making scales out of carbon fiber. I understand that there are some important needs for PPE (personal protective equipment) when machining carbon fiber composites. These apparently relate to respirators, googles and skin protection.

You probably know lots more about this than I do. On the other hand, if you don't, I suggest you research this before commencing any work.

Best - Joe

Hi Joe, thanks for the advice. In fact, I am familiar with the dangers of CF when machining it. I've done a good amount of work in carbon fiber in the past. It's tough to machine, but the look is absolutely worth it.

Will you be doing any "plus" scales with an extra slot for the pen and a hole inside the corkscrew/Phillips recess for a straight pin?

Any idea when you'll be ready to take orders? I badly want some desert ironwood scales and my wife has a wishlist too. I'd be happy to give you some business right now...

Sure thing. I just need a stock scale to pull the measurements off of for those features.

I can make you a set as soon as I get those measurements. As far as my wood supply, I'm a bit low right now. Soon I'll be making an order for new blanks. So far I've got Quilted Maple, Ironwood, Hawaiian Koa, and a few other pieces of burl on my shopping list.

ColdFusion,

Keep me in mind, I would love one out of exotic wood, I make pens, so I know the woods, email me sometime

Thanks
Gregg

Bquinlan has been kind enough to mail me the 91mm plus handles as well as 84mm handles. Thanks Bob!

The first batch of approx. 10 sets of handles will be done in Ironwood in both 91mm and 91mm plus styles.

What a stroke of luck. I think I found the only seller of large thin ironwood blanks on the entire internet.

How did you guys want me to finish the wood? Personally, I like a simple linseed oil/wax job, but it's up to you guys.

So far 5 sets have been spoken for. 5 left in the Ironwood order.

I don't know much about wood finishes. Something reasonably durable would be good, but I suspect that ironwood will hold up fairly well in any case.

Got the 91mm plus scales as well as the 84's today. Here is a rendering of the 91mm plus. I'm ready to start cutting, I just need the wood to arrive.

Most people attach non-plastic SAK scales using something like 5-minute epoxy. However, the best suggestion I've heard recently is to use "Goop", which hardens more like rubber cement and allows the scales to be removed if necessary, without destroying them.

Will you be able to do ivory? I'll supply my own materials if you would like, and I'd LOVE to place orders for 91mm plus knives in carbon fiber and other interesting materials. How about heat color Ti for a Vic explorer plus!:) (I could do my own heat coloring if you could mill the titanium. Please contact me by PM!
