Victorinox versus Wenger ??

I'll take V'nox any day. In my experience their product is superior to Wenger in the area of fit and finish. Most other aspects, such as materials, are fairly equal.

Victorinox versus Wenger - which make the best quality SAK's ?

from my experience ,vic had a better steel quality and finish, and the knife had a better outlook than those from wenger...... ;)

but wenger is NOT suck.....it had better design yet, scissor that dun need the fxxking spring ,plus a patent bottle opener with safty scewdiver,etc....

so my conclusion is depends on yr own need.....think wht u need before buying a knife....

It's like this. Victorinox blows Wegner out of the water, but Wegner is the best non V'nox brand. I don't like them at all because they cost just as much and aren't as good.

When it comes to design, that's where I love Victorinox and absolutely detest Wegner. Victorinox has a kind of sublime simplicity while Wegners look, feel, open, walk, and talk awkwardly and clumsily. At least to me.

i hate the compass........i dun think there is a need to integrate a compass into a SAK....

:grumpy:

I agree on the spring issue relative to the Vics. However, take a look at the new Swisstool Spirit and pay attention to the scissor design - could this be the future?

Cheers - Joe :)

What an excellent discussion! Anyway, depending on brand, there are some things that Wenger does not possess but Victorinox has and vice-versa. IMO, it is the publicity that Victorinox has, Wenger is lacking. For example, when NASA acquired SAKs for their shuttle missions, what more could you ask for? I mean, endorsement from the guys who sent a man up the moon! That is publicity! :D As for Wenger, hmmm...

30+ yrs. carrying Victorinox....never even considered buying a Wenger, even though I checked them out, too....'nuff said!?!?

I've have both -- I prefer Victorinox. I've had seven Vics. I've been satisfied with ALL of them (lost a couple of Classics, still have the other 5). I've had two Wengers, but lost one. I sort of hate the Wenger I still have. The scales fell off pretty quickly. Also, the blade is supposed to lock. Within about a year the lock quit working, and I didn't abuse it.

Right now I have the Wenger wrapped up in a sock that I soaked with salty water. It's been in it for about a week. No rust on the blade or tools, but the aluminum liners seem to be corroded.

So if everybody is buying Vic - who the hell is buying Wenger ?

How come Wenger aint gone bust or been bought out by Victor ??

Price? I found that Wenger is a little bit cheaper than Vic, and some big retailers in Canada (Sears, the Bay,etc) only carry Wenger :footinmou
Also
Wenger scissor is serrated, Vic is not
Vic embed logo RULEZ,shiny and metalistic, while Wenger logo look cheap-ish and cheesy
Wenger toothpick SUX big time :barf: , it broke for the first week of use, the Vic toothpick after 3 years still serves me well.

/edit
Wenger SWISS POCKETGRIP looks really innovation to me  , a leatherman-class plier in a SAK style.

I wonder if Wenger are kept alive by their Swiss Military contract. I thought they existed because of swiss law that prevents total monopolies.

Also a good lesson in business - quality product is only one of the factors determining sucess. Wengers are poorer than Vic in almost every way, but are not poorest in the market. Effective marketing and distribution does the rest. Discerning customers (like knifeknuts) are only a small percentage of the market.

Have you tried to buy a simple, robust, good quality cell phone lately? They are all cheap flimsy junk aimed at 14 year old girls. Quality in that market comes way second to useless gimmicks and massive hype.

IMHO the average consumer buys a Swiss Army Knife not a Wenger or a Vic Nox.
V'Nox has done a much better job of promotion and advertising the Swiss Army brand than Wenger.
I don't think the average user can really tell the difference in quality between the two brands..and they aren't really that far apart all things considered.
Wenger has better scissors, locking blades, locking screwdriver.
Vic'Nox has a little better fit and finish, far better selection in the Alox handles and in the larger Sak's.
I like both and use both alot and have never found either of their products to be wanting!
A friend of mine who is a hardware buyer had a interesting comment on the knives..........he placed similar models in salt water overnight and the Wenger came out virtually unscathed while the Vic wasn't even able to open the blades after the salt treatment!
I am too cheap to try the experiment myself LOL
Kap

Cool experiment !

One thing is for certain though - these Swiss Guys are raking in the cash !!

Your average non-brand SAK style knife available almost everywhere sells for 10% of the price of Vic-Weng - sure the branded ones are better quality which naturally means they cost more to make and they do spend on marketting etc. but still ..... these guys have got a HUGE profit margin and hardly any "like for like" competition ??

Yup, it aint just the Oil Companies who run a cartel !!

this is why i hate aluminum handle......why not check out wen's site to see the stailess steel handle wenger SAKs?? :)

I carry only Victorinox SAK's, though I do own about five Wengers. The overall quality is simply better. Also, I personally prefer the Vic scissors over Wenger's. If the spring breaks (which one of mine did, on a Classic), you simply buy another spring and replace it. Takes about a couple minutes and a pair of good pliers. Wenger claims their scissors are springless, but in fact they do have a spring, more stout than the Vic's scissors spring, but if theirs breaks, you can't just replace it without sending in the whole knife. Ond of my friends has carried a Wenger-made SwissBuck, the scissor spring on his broke and, being unwilling or unable to replace that spring, his scissors are completely useless. I also find the Vic scissors cut cleaner and don't nod up and down during use, not to mention I hate the serrations on the scissor blades.

The Vics have better fit and finish, and are more streamlined in design, and feel more solid. Better walk and talk action, and the knife blades are a bit stronger and definitely take and hold a better edge than the Wengers.
