Victorinox versus Wenger ??

Wow, what can did I open...??

The thread was started to raised the question of which is truly the original swiss knife. And by the 2nd or 3rd reply it was clear - the predecessors of what is now known as Victorinox. So that's clear.

Now it has evolved into a question of which is better. All my SAKs are Vics, except one. It was a Wenger with a unique lock: it's like a lever. IMHO its a very nice knife and lock. Much better than the Vic thumb slides which I have a few. Clean a few fish on the beach/stream with it and the sand/mud clogs up the lock.

Unfortunately I lent it to my sis in law, who lost the damned knife in Switzerland. Can you imagine: the knife went home!

I think we should be so lucky that both Vic and Wenger are around today - choice is a luxury. And the differences in knife/product making ideology: more choices for us! Why bother taking sides? Buy what we like - regardless of name. I tot leathermen were the last word in multitools - now like many others, I am glad there was the alternative called a swisstool. So choice was the saviour here.

Can't imagine if there was just one multitool company, and we're all growing old bitching and spitting in this forum about the same knife...

Wenger, any day of the month. I have a ranger 06, i really like the fact that it's so big, bigger than anything i've ever seen from vic anyway. Those extra couple of mm's make a big difference when using the saw.

I also really like the clip point style blade, i'm not sure it makes a difference, but it looks awesome.

I Abuse my wenger constantly and it's never let me down.

The great part about the two SAK divisions (they are the same company now) is what I call the "Equalization Effect". Example: I have 12 Vics and 6 Wengers I have to even things up now don't I? Hey man, ANY excuse to buy more SAKs.:D :D :D

If parent company Victorinox can get Wenger to use their steel and QA practices, then I'd start buying more Wengers. :)

A (packlock-style) locking blade (but as thick as Vic's standard knives), using "evolution" (Evo?) scales and a "scientist" or "old yeoman"' tool combination (in-line philips, scissors, maybe magnifier or wenger's magnifier)... that would be my dream SAK. (I still prefer Victorinox for the most part, though).

EDIT: not to exceed half an inch thickness, preferably much less. Heck, since I'm in fantasy mode maybe include a feature that allows it to fold in and out of another dimension - that way I won't have any problems with bulkiness)

Wenger. If they would leave out that plastic ruler with the compass I would buy the Wenger over the Vic. The magnifier, adjustable wrench, scissors, and pliers are so much better than the Vics.

Although one could debate about the scissors and pliers quality
(I personally much prefer the Victorinox for both) -
The magnifying glass on the Wengers I have had have been terrible -

Wenger magnifying glass is in a metal body with small slot screwdriver tip.
My samples have been very disappointing - the magnifying glass exhibited large amounts of distortion. The lens did not have smooth well formed surface, it shows some concentric ripples and magnifies unevenly. Very disappointing, it is also much smaller than the Victorinox.
Design flaw - the magnifying glass with metal body and built-in screwdriver tip uses up the full length of a slot (whereas the Victorinox only takes up half the slot) when in functionality the lens negates the advantage of the longer screwdriver, as it would get in the way in the rotating motion.

Just to clarify, they remain two distinct companies with Victorinox "owning" Wenger as a subsidiary company.

These Victorinox vs Wenger threads have been beaten to death. Some like the features that Victorinox knives have, some like the features that Wengers have. I like them both equally. Bottom line, both are well made high quality knives that are worthy of being called Swiss Army Knives. Besides, since Victorinox owns Wenger the argument of which is better is now moot.

It's easy to forget that while some here have seen it all before, there are new collectors and enthusiasts who have to ask questions sometimes. I know that they could use the forum search tools for such questions, but then again, the tools can be a little hard for newer computer users to understand at first.

I used to use the search function a lot and read the older threads, BUT the idea for engaging is for the "conversation". Every now and then, you never know, you learn something different. So point about beating a dead horse is well taken , but understand that there's a conversational aspect to it.

That is all.:)

i just want to reiterate... Victorinox owns Wenger

To Keep Wenger from falling into foreign hands Vic bought Wenger. So they are the owners. Vic has not interferred with Wenger's design or production. Wenger continues on its own.

Wengar for me, dont like the too thin profile on vix, and wengar has a great belly on its blades. Wengar just seems tougher and more robust in my hands.
I dont say wengar blows vix out of the water, its just a slight preference, but I feel people aren't giving wengar enough of a chance here
