Victorinox versus Wenger ??

I believe Victorinox sets the standard for SAK. It has been around for so long that SAK is now synonymous with Victorinox.

Wenger comes second. A lot of people actually can't tell the difference. A Swiss knife is a Swiss knife to them. :)

Wenger knives are not easy to find in Australia, whereas every camping store, surplus or cutlery outlet has racks of Victorinox on display.

Having said that, I believe the vics are better quality build and design.

There's not really a serious comparison between the two. Victorinox is clearly superior in every way that matters....

wrong...at least wenger had some better innovation in their SAKs! ;)

I will add some confusion to the thread. :)
Ok, my first SAK was Wenger Basic that I confused with Victorinox. After a while I realised that there are two SAK companies. Since I already bought Wenger I did not buy Victorinox, but after some time I felt I needed more tools on my knife like scissors, twisers, toothpick etc. So, I bought Victorinox SwissChamp. Then I started buying SAKs as presents for my parents and friends, but always Victorinox because I felt Victorinox was better. Then I broke my Wenger (really a cosmetical damage, not serious) and received a brand new Wenger instead. That Wenger was almost immediately "confiscated" by my wife who still uses it every day. And she did not even want to have Victorinox instead because she found Wenger to be more "cute"! I had a second look on Wenger: yes, Wenger is quite a basic knife, but the blade shape is more interesting and it is actually very beatiful when closed. And it still gives the feeling of a robust knife. It is also lighter than Victorinox what is good for a keychain knife. Victorinox is a real workhorse and I do not see much of grace in it, but it is robust and has more tools than Wenger.
It might be strange, but many people told me that they liked Wenger more than Vicotrinox (in truth, there are not many of them) because of the blade shape or size. One of Wenger locking blade knives has 100 mm of blade while large Vixtorinoxes have 84 mm! Not much difference, but when you cut watermelon you feel the diffference. I would really love to have a Wenger with 100 mm blade instead of my Victorinox provided Wenger did not have any other tools except blade. And this is where Victorinox wins - it has more variety of knives!
So, which knife is better? I do not know really, they are quite the same, but the difference is in the blade and tools.
Regards,

Second that ckl! Ever saw a "bike-chain-changearator" on a Victorinox? Me thinks not. The closest they got was an "Inline Skater toolkit" that was basically a tricked out Spartan with a spanner and stuff with a funky sheath! Seems the multi-purpose hook is innovative enough though... :D

So if everybody is buying Vic - who the hell is buying Wenger ?

How come Wenger aint gone bust or been bought out by Victor ??

I think people who don't look as closely or care as much about performance as the users on this board will buy Wenger if they're a little cheaper. There's a reason the two brands (and all the Asian knock-offs) look so similar.

As long as Victorinox is making good money, and Wenger doesn't threaten them too much in the market-place, Victorinox is probably okay with leaving things as they are.

Unless I'm mistaken, Victorinox now owns Wenger.

Vic has said the two companies will remain independent and there will be no major changes to either product line at this time. Wenger was about to go bankrupt and in danger of being bought by a foreign firm. Vic wanted to prevent that and keep it in the "Swiss" family. Good move, I think.
