Video: Golden Eagle Takes Down Goats off Mountain Cliffs

That is amazing! Wife didn't appreciate it as much, but wow, I couldn't believe when it carried that second one all the way back to it's nest.

wow!
awesome vid!
i've heard/seen vids of eagles hunting wolves and preying on small deer and stuff.
awesome stuff.

there is a bald eagle that circles around near my house every once in a while and it's realy awesome.
the hawks around here always get into fights with little mockingbirds and get chased away!

It may seem surprising or counter-intuitive, but mockingbirds, blackbirds, crows, and various comparatively little birds, can usually chase off larger birds of prey, such as hawks, osprey, eagles, owls, etc.

How? Why?

While the larger birds have more power and better weapons, the smaller birds can accelerate faster, turn more sharply, and generally fly more deftly. This makes it possible for the little birds to come up behind the larger birds and pluck out a tail feather or two from the larger bird, with the larger bird of prey quite prone and nearly defenseless against this. A large bird of prey only needs to lose a few tail feathers for it to negatively impact its flying ability enough that they will become an ineffective hunter and will starve to death. Birds of prey can't risk this, so they flee from smaller birds that charge them from behind.

This behavior is most often observed when a bird of prey flies near the nest of smaller birds, engaging the protective instincts of the smaller birds. It is also observed when a flock of small birds mitigates apparent threat by driving birds of prey from their area.

Brian,

Thats out of control!

Evolute,

I have seen that small bird/big bird aggression, I have red-tailed hawks circling my land a lot and occasionally smaller birds will come out and harass them till they leave.

Evolute: yeah the hawks actually let their talons hang low and twist in the air to try and grab the mockingbirds.
it's pretty cool to watch.
:D

Just recently there was a tv show here in Japan about life on the Mongolian steppe. I wish I`d taped it. Some kid`s sheep were being harassed by a wolf, so he ran and told the people in his village. (I always thought these people were nomads, but apparently not.) A half dozen hunters and falconers went out after the wolf, and took it down with 2 trained hunting Eagles working together. They were huge! I`d never seen anything like it until today. Thanks!

Good lord, it's only a matter of time before they come for our youngins, gather a posse! We've gotta stop the eagles!

:eek:Against a wolf?
Did he try to defend himself against the eagles, or was running the hell away his only thought?

In the Mongolian steppe, I would think killing a wolf isn't as easy as trowing him from a cliff. So how did they manage to kill it? Or did the hunters finish him themselves?...

Damn, too many questions, wish I could view that tv show too.:)

Here is the only vid on the theme I could find myself on the web, and it's only a diashow:

WOW very impressive, I had two goats that were almost taken away by a large owl. I actually heard the owl drop them:eek: ran out with a shotgun and the goats were flat out stunned and wouldnt move. Talon marks on there necks and heads.
