Video: How to Satin Finish a Knife Blade by Hand

Well done Aaron. Out of curiosity (and this is just the way I've done it) why not do the ricasso first? In my mind it seems to make more sense because I'm sloppy and in case I screw up coming off the ricasso and hit the blade I can clean it up when I move onto the blade and fix any "oops" I did coming off the ricasso.

When I was editing the video I realized that as you said doing the ricasso first would be better, not sure why I hadn't done that before! But by that point I had to stick with what I had shot unfortunately..

Nick: I did the rest of a batch of knives using the push/pull technique you were talking about earlier! Worked very well, I had kinda tried that long ago with miserable results, the body mechanics make all the difference... Pivoting from the waist instead of using your arms like you mentioned made it go very smoothly!

This is one of the reasons I love sharing my videos and so on! I often learn new techniques in short order! Thanks guys!

Guys I have been driving my self nuts looking for a video all day today. I know I saw it here on the forum somewheres. I'ts the one where the author mentions that he used to prep pianos for painting and talks about how it applies to knife making. Does anyone have a link to it, I woud greatly appreciate it.

It's toward the end of the 'What's going on in your shop' thread, I don't recall the name of the video though...

I believe it was Karl Anderson in a video linked in post #2026 by coldsteelburns ... The thread is the one mentioned by Aaron above.. Start looking around page 100. I am using an iPad or I would have cut and pasted the url.

Very cool video! Well done and informative. Thank you very much for taking the time to do it.
