Videos of Bottle Chopping and Hair Splitting

BAD: We need to see a glass bottle cut in half. If anyone can get a knife that sharp I am sure it'd be you.

I don't think so buddy ;) I love my INFI too much to abuse it on things that I shouldn't be cutting. But if anyone is willing to donate their knife to the cause... then I would be more than willing to give it a try :p

Seriously though....Glass Bottle cutting is pretty harsh on the edge of a knife. Especially ones with thinner edges. Most if not all edges will either dent, roll, or chip. Yes, even INFI. Glass is harder than steel so there is really no way to cleanly cut through it. A knife can only shatter it to pieces and not really cut through it.

But Kurt Russle said he did it in that movie "Big Trouble In Little China".

:p I didn't think it was possible but it sounded cool. Not practical but cool enough.

Again, great vids. :)

Thin Anorexic GW splitting hair This one was tough because my hair is fairly thin and flimsy.

Ban,
What do you do for a living? After looking at your videos I'm thinking that you are a cabinetmaker like myself.

Yes, we are very much alike :thumbup: I also work a whole lot with granite countertops.

For countertops I do mainly Corian and other solid surface materials. I outsource all my granite. Its a killer on router bits.;):D

Yeah granite is a real pain to cut and polish compared to corian and marble. Especially the dense stuff like Black Galaxy. The heavy duty diamond embedded bullnose routerbits seems to hold up pretty well for me. But then again that is because there is running water when the router is turned on.

Ban: That is a beautiful thing. I have one blade. CPM3V with a convex edge that will do that. Not as well as your blade. Thank you so much. Finally I have a goal in my life worth achieving. THanks for showing us the way

I think the key to getting clean cuts through the can is the polished edge and edge geometry. Also, a nice continuous cutting stroke with follow through is key. The one I have on video is actually not that impressive. I did one where the top half was very cleanly severed and the bottom portion stayed put and didn't even move or topple over. Unfortunately, I didn't get that one on video. However, I did do it in front of a few friends and it surprised the hell out of them including myself :D

Soda can was cool as hell but it's the hair splitting that floats my boat. I usually test my edges by cutting hanging hairs. I never tried what you managed with the GW till today. As I said one blade will go through the hair the way you were able to manage. Now my aim is to sharpen all my users to that level but to be honest I do not know if I will be able to achieve that level of keenness. I take my hat off to you and your marvelous sharpening prowess. Again congratulations.

Oh, the hair splitting part :D I don't think that is too hard actually. Just make sure you polish the edge really well and most any steel that can take a keen edge should be able to do it. I think that most edges sharpened on a guided system like a EdgePro should be able to do it if the 3000+ polished tapes are used.

I wish I had your skills. My edges can cut hanging hair with a light swing but I find your sharpening job extremely impressive. I use a sharpmaker now but I mean to get an edgepro soon. Still, do not minimize your skills. Few people I know get things that sharp. One day soon I hope to be one of them but now I am not in your league.

Yep, I have my Warden sharpened and mirror polished to 30deg, and I can't get a hair to split. But I did all my sharpening with a 220/600 DMT diamond stone, then a 800/4000 king waterstone, then a strop with veratias green. But I think it needs to be more refined or something, since I just can't get that last bit of sharpness. Again, amazing work!

Keep stropping with the green compound without rolling over the edge and ruining the micro peak. If you roll over the peak then you might want to back up one step to bring it back.

I just tried the hair test with my FABM and it was able to shave thin slices from the hair and not deep slices because the edge was more obtuse and thicker than the GW.

What you are trying to attain is getting that super high polished fine edge. Keep in mind that everyone's hair is different also. If you have very fine hair then it would be more difficult because it would just bend and give too easily.

I found that for hair splitting Green Rouge just enough. No need for diamond powders really. But it is not stropping - polishing and take not 4-5 passes but as many as sharpening and require attention to not to roll the edge. I think with leather wheel Ban using it is easier to not to roll the edge and keep right angle and light pressure.

Ban - where you get your leather wheel from?

Thanks, Vassili.

I also add that hair has palm-tree like surface and you should whittle it opposite to he shells. You should hold it at the top of hair and cut from top to root.

Thanks, Vassili.
