What a wonderful collection!

I wonder about the cap lifter, the fruit tester and the wooden handled knife.

I know that the fly fisherman's knife was not a part of the tooling inventory but it could have been made up for a customer like Voss.

Thanks for your kind comments Mr. Russell. i have a pic of the caplifter.
i'll get the others up tomorrow plus the "C.Bertram/Germany" on the pile side tang of the C.L. if you wish.

That cap lifter is real, few people know of the secondary trademark of Bertram, Tresor. This kind of knife was made on demand. If Bertram did not have the tooling they would buy parts from someone who did. Notice the quality of the blade grind.

4 1/8" wood handle Jack, marked "Bertram/Solingen". Pile side tang has some lines that might be what's left of a logo, but even with a 9x loupe little can be seen.

4 7/8" Fruit Tester, ivory celluloid, marked with H&R logo over "stainless". pile side:"C.Bertram/Germany"

customs014-10.jpg

Any ideas on age of the Jack knife ?

My guess is that the wood handled knife was made before WWI. The fruit knife was made for export to the U.S. before WWII.

I have just spent day after day judging a collectidon of almost 200 Hen and Rooster knives. Some of them were so well refinished that I had to go over them three or four times to determine that they were indeed resfinished. Our email folks can look forward to seeing them soon.

One made in the 1860s some made in thje late 1800s most in the 19500s and 1960s a few fakes and several made by fsrost. the fakes and Frost knives will not be shown.

Notice that the changes from one stamp to the next is very slight and almost duplicated . There may have been some additional changes since this info was published. Don't know.

Based on the above, the tang stamp matches the 1864-1900 stamp the most. But, surely that can't be right. There are signs of previous rust and use, but I'm having a hard time believing this could be a hundred year old knife.

Tdhe knife was sone of abouit 300 made for the dilrectors of the company making Jack Daniels Whisky. The handles are white oak from whisky barrles. Made ab out 1978
there were no pocket knives made between 1913-1918, 1938-1945. Only the first and last marks shown above are corrsect

Thank you very much Mr. Russell! I was hoping you'd weigh in.

Above are 2 of my Stag Handled CM-6 Coffin Jacks c.1976

And here are 2 of my Jacaranda Wood Handled, Bertram CM-7 .45 Long Colt Folding Knives c.1979

These older Hen & Rooster offerings are truly some of the nicest folding pocket knives I have ever encountered.

Hi team, can anyone tell me whether the old Bertram knives are carbon or stainless steel? Just picked up an old Fife congress for a steal!

This stockman from the mid 1980s has German Stainless blades, an alloy close to 440B in composition.
