Virgil "Gus" Grissom's Survival Knife

so you think he really sold em...or just trying to save face.....

There was one "I'll take it", didn't see the other. I believe him.

Hey, I think he overeacted a bit but you have to respect someone who stands up for their convictions.

Holy moly! This is the Internet folks! I ranted, I moved on. I wouldn't sell my ESEE knives for nothin'. (I did sell one to a very good friend who needed a big knife (the 6) more than I did...and then I promptly bought a 4). Now, of course, I am saving up for the Junglas, having the 5 already. With a 5 and a Junglas (and a Ka-Bar and an Iisakki Leuku), the 6 didn't have a niche.

I won't be selling nothing (having already sold all my Gerbers and a couple of nice Roselli safe queens to buy ESEEs and Moras and Spydercos and Iisakkis).

Dang, I was late. What did that HEST go for?

Hey, we respect everyone here and everyone is entitled to their opinions but nothing is sacred here.

Tender feelings don't do well on the internet for the most part, especially here.

One thing I can say is that I doubt anybody gives more product to the LE and Mil. communities than Jeff and Mike. They show their respect with their wallets and never ask for recognition in return.

I agree. He got bent pretty fast considering the context of Jeff's statement. Sarcasm doesn't translate well for some people, I guess. Gotta hand it to him though, he did what he said he would do.

I only wish I would've gotten to his sales thread sooner...

sad part is i believe that jeff was just pointing out the emphasis we all put on survival knives....when in the long run they may not help a bit.....i think the sarcasm was directed more towards our(internet community) ideals of survival and reality.....oh well.....i ain't losing sleep over it....

I liked the original post. I've never been down to that park. We like Yellowwood and all over Brown County. I will definitely check that out.

(if the guy really had convictions, he'd thrown them away, not taken money for them :) )

Good call, Expat. Fully how that works, makes me think of the movie "Thanks for Smoking". Crappy movie, but the scene with Sam Elliot is priceless.

Moose, I think that tempest in a teacup can be summed up by misquoting the eloquently succinct Doc Holliday, "My convictions only go so far."

Strange thread. I disagree with the above. Throwing money in the trash is ignorant. Conviction or not.

I think Spark's gonna have to start handing out XANAX prescriptions with all gold/platinum memberships in the future!:D People need to take a chill pill and unwind a whole lot.

He should've just given them to me. I would never kill an innocent little piggy or make any kind of joke about anything whatsoever. I understand how serious this internet stuff is. I gots convictions in several states.

Great thread MD!!! I can't believe how spotless they got his knife after being at the bottom after that long. In that generation, Gus was beyond an American hero along with Gordon, who helped design the blade, and every single astronaut in the Apollo and Gemini programs. I never knew all those other people carried Randall's with them.

Great post man. I have been to many of Indiana's state parks: Brown County, McCormick's Creek, Clifty, Lincoln, and more but Spring Mill is my favorite. I'll defiantly be checking out the renovated Grissom memorial now.

Some people's sacred cows are more sacred than other people's sacred cows.

I enjoyed reading the OP as well.

To the OP, I'm from Indiana originally, but have never been to this particular state park. I hope to go back this spring to visit my parents, so maybe I'll have to go check this out! Sounds like a lot of fun!!!

First of all, I'd like to apologize to Mr. Randall for making public a statement that should have been private. I'd also like to apologize for the tone of my reply. Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit and a man of my advanced age should show a bit more maturity. It's not the first time I've stepped on my own dick and probably not the last.

However, my reaction to the statement was born of three decades spent in a military cockpit. I've buried quite a few colleagues and on four occasions I stood in a friend's living room to tell his family that their husband/father wouldn't be coming home again. The death of a pilot is a very hot button issue with me and Gus Grissom was personal hero of mine. A flawed hero, but a hero nonetheless. I let my feelings cloud my judgment when I typed my previous response.

However, I stand by my decision to sell the knives. Throwing them away would be a selfish waste, in my opinion. They are fine tools that will serve their new owner well. And while I probably won't own another, I don't think any less of ESEE products nor will I speak ill of them. They are well made and designed tools. Not that it matters, but I sold them for far less than I paid. Not sure how losing a few more dollars would strengthen my convictions any further. And I've never been one to cut off my nose to spite my face.

In closing, I'd also like to apologize to the OP for creating a train wreck of his thread. I found it very interesting and next time I'm in that area, I'll make a point to visit that park.
