Vista or XP Pro in new computer

"If you acquired Windows Vista pre-installed on a computer from a major manufacturer (sometimes referred to as an Original Equipment Manufacturer or OEM), Windows Vista will require re-activation if you replace the motherboard with a motherboard not provided by the OEM."

I build it myself with an OEM license, not from a major manufacturer. I don't get all those perqs.

Yes you do. You may have to do the re-activation over the telephone, but they'll let you do it to replace a faulty motherboard.

How do you get those words out of "Windows Vista will require re-activation"?

Unless you're using a volume license, doesn't XP require activation, too?

My bad Jennifer... you are correct (I was looking at info from 2006). MS has since eased off on their initially strict activation policy. It appears now, that they allow you to have unlimited activations.

Initially, you had 10 "activations"... after that, buy another license.

Again, my apologies... my bad info, you were correct (and I thank you for correcting my error!)

Blind faith – look up “built in by the NSA that reliably breaks Dual_EC-DRBG.” and what Bruce Schneier has to say.

Vista would have to undergo some extensive ripping apart before I'd touch it. Given the speed M$ is trying to roll out the next development to get beyond the embarrassing mess that is ME-II I doubt I'll ever want to. It is not the revolutionary experience many portend. It's about you giving away ownership. It's only a pain if DX10 matters to you and you have to take extra steps. The next offering might be truly revolutionary, let's wait and see. 'Till then a nicely pimped out XP does everything I could want a little windows box to do.
