Everyone should have a SAK on them or with them at all times (as a fairly new knife user/collector, this is just my opinion---but open to any ideas). But, there are other things you should have on hand (besides your cell phone, which may not work, depending). Among these things are as follows: extra water, weatherproof watch, lighter (preferably Zippo or some other type of wind proof, water proof lighter), flashlight, extra batteries fully charged, hard candy or sealed packages of crackers or some other non perishable dry carb food, Paracord, Safety Whistle, Compass. (You can store extra water and blankets, extra dry clothes, shoes in your trunk)

What other vital items should people have them on at all times, or with them, that I'm not listing? Thoughts? I'm sure I am missing some pretty obvious ones.

Here is a photo of some of the stuff I have:

Nice post Blade Girl! And a nice assembly of gadgets as well. But as a lifelong knife user who doesn't carry a SAK or multitool, I suppose I might take issue with the idea that a SAK is "vital". Or the common traditional American pattern, the "Scout" or "Camp Utility". For more than a half century a slim stockman has served me well. As to the other inclusions in your... shall we call this your "EDC" kit?... All of those items will be according to personal preference influenced by location, experience and bulk. I know it can be a pain transferring a myriad of small items from one coat or pants pocket to another on a daily basis. Or even from one vehicle to another. For myself at least, less is more... more likely to be carried that is.

Again, thank you for showing your preferences! It looks to be very useful in a wide variety of situations you expect to encounter, both planned and unplanned. :)

Grandpa taught me. Always have a knife and a bandana/handkerchief.

Whether in the woods, in the mall, on the water or just stuck in traffic, those two are always on me.

I'm fairly new at knives, Codger..so any advice is welcome. That's why I posted this as a question :-) Thanks! I really appreciate your taking the time to help! :)

Always good to listen to grandpa! Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Yep me too. What I carry everyday is not what concerns me. It's more the knowledge that will get me out of a sticky sitch

The SAK in many variations is a solid EDC item anywhere knives are still legal. They're cheap, durable, and as consistant in quality as any tool made.

Right on! I agree, with what knowledge I have thus far, and experience. Thanks, JB in SC!

Well yes, only time and experience can show us what is helpful to have on hand for us as individuals. So I in no way disapprove of your choices. How do you carry it? A wallet or small zip pouch? By the way, I do have eight grandchildren, but that doesn't make me one whit smarter than the next guy! Nor does the ability to remember President Eisenhower and Nikita Khrushchev!

Here's my breakdown... (from left, top down)

Rolex Deepsea Sea Dweller, ID tag necklace, Zebralight H600F XM-L2, Lexus GS300 key with home keys and bladeless multi tool (doubles as a flail or garrote), GEC 22 pocketknife, Darrel Ralph custom Alcoholics Anonymous AXD, business cards, custom lighter, Indian reservation cigarettes.

Not in the picture is a AA meeting sign in sheet.

I usually carry a small folder as well as my leatherman. I like a multi tool with pliers since I find that I use them constantly. Additionally, I always have my keys on a paracord lanyard with my Gerber shard (love it for the pry option). My watch, a paracord bracelet, bic lighter, small flashlight, chapstick, tissues, wallet and cell phone. That's what is always on my person.

You are just fine, Codger! I accept your advice and help. I carry mine in a Maxpedition bag, green drab, of course :-) It's a pretty sweet bag, have a few pretty cool patches too. I also just purchased a nice backpack in green drab as well, but haven't used it yet. The Maxi bag, I use religiously! I'll get a cool knife photo with the bag later today and upload it!
