A lot of great hunters submitted this first annual Best hunter thread. I would like to have a few of these in my collection.

Doyle knife for me by a very slim margin. John makes a lot of hunters. I have had the pleasure of handling many of them.

Thanks Shane for kicking this off.

I did not include the Doyle and Breda in my nominations, mainly due to the 'heavy' handle looks. Though, I will say they are the hunter style I admire the most. I hope to have a hunter of both makers in my collection at some point.

The Hurak is just proportioned right and I like how it feels in my hand. I could use it all over the place in the field.

Love them all and it was between Ben Seward and Adam for me.Adam got my vote because well, its just as good as it gets!

Ugh, for me it was between John and Sam, and it was tough!! But I love all the other ones as well!

I voted for the Hurak. I love this micarta + hamon version, but the other damascus + koa version of the Hurak kept comming to mind (which I love even more), so it was sort of an unfair 2 vs 1 fight that won it, for me, in my mind. :foot: :D

All four knives are splendid. I voted for John Doyle's hunter. I'm a big fan of John's work - classic elegance, visually balanced, superb execution, wonderful Koa/hamon, and, I can see myself using this hunter in the woods. Great work John!

I was torn. The knife most like what my clients like is the Doyle. It's the one I would most likely use too, and would be very comfortable recommending it to anyone who uses a hunter. I voted for the Seward because of its beauty. I wouldn't consider it a user though.

Well, three of the five knifes I voted for in the last round made it to the finals - Seward, Lurquin and DesRosiers.

Really, really tough for me between the Seward and the Lurquin. Usually, at the end it comes down to which one would I rather own. I DO own one of the Huraks. I would love to own Ben's knife . . .

Gotta pick one . . . and in the end I would not trade my Hurak for any of the other ones. So I pick Sam Murquin, #3.

Well, you asked Shane, and so I will.

This was easy for me. John Doyle's knife. I really enjoyed looking at all of the knives here (Sam's crashing lines, the flipped out Sfreddo integral style). The more I looked (pictures blown up, rotated through 90 degrees, screen moved in and out to make pics lighter then darker), John's knife showed more and more a balance of parts... everything fits everything. The whole looks like a tool for a job.

All the knives are great although while I like the things that Sam does with his design it nor others he has done seem to me to fit my idea of a hunter in this case or as a Bowie in the other thread. I almost bought the knife from John Doyle as it was very nice but had I had the opportunity, the knife I like most of all, much for the reason's that Roger has stated, is the Ben Seward. Of course this is because I like the "ART" knife styling of his work and am not a hunter so would not have occasion to actually use the knife which many of the others voting and commenting likely do. However, Ben's knife is one I could enjoy both looking at and handling every day of the week.

My vote was for the Doyle.

I'm a big fan of Ben Seward's work but I'm not a fan of the handle on this piece.

The Hurak is one of my all time favorite knife designs. But like others have said, no doubt it could handle the work with aplomb but it doesn't seem like a hunter to me.

The DesRosiers is a marvel to look at. I admire the skill it takes to make something like that. The recurve in the blade isn't my favorite and neither are the overall proportions. Still, an incredible piece of work.

The Breda was a close second but honestly I don't think it's the best example of that style I've seen from him. A very pretty knife though.

The Doyle is just so typical of John's work. So well designed, so precisely executed, such style and class while never letting you forget it's all business. The proportions and flow of the piece are a joy to behold as are his materials and finish choices. And as soon as you lay eyes on it, it doesn't say "art knife" or "fighter", it says "HUNTER".

The knives here are all fantastic as are the makers themselves. There isn't one I wouldn't love to own. I am truly honored to be here in the finals with such fine company. A sincere 'Thank You' to everyone who nominated and voted for my knives.

The commentary is really interesting to me and I appreciate everyone that took the time to post they're preferences and reasoning behind the votes.

Ben Seward's knife is so unique and outside the box. I really like the way Ben is pushing himself all the time to be creative. That inspires me. This is a work of art but the handle isn't my favorite here for a true hunter.

Sam's knife is a powerhouse in his typical style, impressive in detail and imposing. But I share some others' sentiments that hunter isn't the first thing that comes to mind.

Adam's knife is very striking visually. The contrasts and shapes are fantastic. It's the most technical of the group to make and Adam pulled it off wonderfully. It was a close call, but came in second place for me.

I voted for Ben Breda's knife. It's the most like what I picture a true hunter to be. I love the blade, shape, the materials and the fittings and embellishments. I think Ben and I have very similar style and tastes. Ben's is the one that most grabs me on initial visual response that says 'Hunter' and that's why his got my vote.

Thanks again for the votes for me guys and a big thanks to Shane for putting this together and running it! I hope this is an annual event just like the bowie thread.

Wow again at a current DesRosiers/Doyle 30-30 tie! Frankly, I'd be happy if it ended that way given that they were my first and second choices split by a hair.

In all the years of Best Bowie we have never seen a tie. That would be wild to have that as the result of the first Best Hunter. And I agree it would be cool. But we shall see.
