Actually, I don't but I couldn't resist the dig.

I voted. Finally. For the thick ASH-1. Mainly because I think it would, similar to the FFBM, wear out noss4 before it broke. :p

we already know what kind of punishment a fat piece of infi can take....and a fat ASH might last longer than a FFBM because it has a shorter blade which would equal greater rigidity......


i want to see how well a skinny piece will stand up.....i think it might last just as long because of the thinner blade geometry....the skinny ASH will have greater metal shearing capabilities and perhaps require less force on the spine when cutting through.....the less force will prevent the blade from shattering.....
 
Another PM from noss4, this one with name calling and attitude. I responded in kind with... ahem... let's just call it "a greater degree of directness"... and put him on Ignore. He's now 1 of 4 people I've put on this list since 2000, so he's "special." I hope noss4 gets the gist of my impressions, which were put to him in no uncertain terms, and stops trying to PM me now that his messages are being blocked. :D

That said, I don't want folks to get the impression that I am nothing but a noss4 basher. There are some good things to be said about his procedures:
- They give an idea of what one knife will do under one set of circumstances.
- They are somewhat like stress tests done in industry product assessment.
- They can be entertaining and certainly give folks something to argue over.
- There has been some attempt to standardize the various procedures. http://www.knifetests.com/page29.html

In contrast, my biggest qualms have always been:
- There is little in the way of quantifiable data across which knives can be compared/contrasted. Terms like "energy" or even "chop" are used loosely.
- "Standard" procedures still shift somewhat from knife to knife.
- noss4 places the reputations of companies on the line out in the open, but he remains anonymous to viewers of his site, and his face remains hidden.
- His postings and actions in his earliest threads here at BFC left some doubts in my mind about credibility and motives.

There you have it. Both the good and the bad from my subjective standpoint. That said, if he destroys a BATAC, I'll likely take a look at the videos since...

I guess I'm going to have to step in. I told the OP I was going to stay out until the poll ended. This is why I sent him a PM to respond to his comment.
Guyon sent me a nice reply. by this I mean not so nice. So I responded back,
in language he could understand.

Of course he ran out into the open and posted the details of my first PM just like I said he would in my second PM.

Please Guyon I hope you put me on ignore. In fact I will send you a few bucks to put me on ignore and keep me on ignore. Please let it be forever.

This is my only post on this issue since Guyon left out a few details.

I think noss4 should remember (a) I didn't start the PM volleys and (b) Mike's caveat about keeping the personal out of this thread. If noss4 wants to continue the name calling and finger pointing, he can email me. I don't think he wants to post my last PM to him as he'll get an immediate infraction for language. :p Better yet, if noss4 so desires, he can email me with his phone number, and I'll handle the long distance/minutes charges, and we can talk like adults without the attitudes.

While I'll admit to some playful sarcasm in some posts, overall, I've presented more than a single perspective about his body of work, all of which you can find in old posts around/about his practices. I'm not going to start digging up old threads, but they're available with a Search. I have my opinions about his practices, as do plenty of others, and though I recognize that noss4 has an awful lot of identity tied up in his website and affiliated posts, IMO he needs to work on how he deals with criticism. The issue which apparently set him off was my critique of anonymity. It seems to be a touchy subject with him, and I admit I don't know all the possible reasons this might be the case.

I originally presented these ideas about noss4 simply because I figured norcalblacktail might not know why some folks react negatively to him. In retrospect, I should have conveyed the information via PM, and I apologize to norcal and the readers of this thread for not doing so in the first place. Given that I did choose to post publicly, I concede that my comments could have been more balanced and less biased from the outset. My intentions, at least in one direction, were good. I was actually trying to smooth over the Rat/norcalblacktail tensions, and I wound up with my own set. Nevertheless, this entire exchange with noss4 has had value for me, and using my best judgment here, that's all I'm going to say about that.


With all this in mind, I'd like to change my vote to the BATAC, as I've always liked a frontrunner. Also, I hope noss4 is serious about sending me money. I'll donate it toward the purchase of another Busse for him to destroy. ;)
