alrite in light of the recent mess i.e. whats so great about a busse. this thread has made me rethink about a up comming purchase im a hardcore spyderco fan love all of them. inhave the hossom fb16 and used the hell out of it . its been great but want a little smaller for the odds and ends
heres the question i can get the hosson dayhiker for about 160$$$usd
which will leave money for other survival gear to be bought or i can buy a busse badger attack for some where in the 300$$ dollar range or a ZT in 3v for about 239$$usd but that will be all my money i've read to pros and cons of the busse and exchanged email with jerry hossom he say n690co will hold up great so now im at a dead lock would like to see what you all vote for. the knife will be used for batoning bush craft and day to day camp living. thanks. the prob is i can't find any stress test for the n690 but lots on the busse.

I do not own any of these knives, however looking over the styles, materials, and PRICE..... I'd go with the Spyderco. No real lengthy explanation as to why, mainly $$$$.

To be honest, I would rather have 6 Moras, a Vic farmer, and a Wetterlings small hunter for less than any one of them.

JMO of course.

thnks for your senceable answer i have 6 moras and wouldn't trade them for anything and i have 7 spyderco temperance and one spyderco fb 16 and about 88 spyderco folders. as i said im spydernuts:D

Out of those three, I'd go with the Busse. If you end up not liking it, it's easy to sell and get your money back. The Badger is tough for a blade of that size, really tough.

However, for "bushcraft and day to day camp living" I'm not sure any of those blades would be my choice.

Honestly, for what it is worth, I think a better choice would be a Swamp Rat Mini Uncle Mojo. Saves you $100 over the Busse, plus the sweet recurve, and still has the great Busse family warrantee...

Great camp knife.

I voted for the Busse, but I'd try to find the opportunity to handle one in person to make sure it suits your style of doing things before you pull the trigger on one. I'm sure they're all great knives and I'm kind of curious about the Dayhiker myself.

the hossom forrester as met or exceeded my expections for everything i've used for everything. even the small stuff and it works great but in the small task it makes my hand tire quickly. thats why im looking for somthing around the size of the
rat5 it hides easy can handle large jobs but is small enough not to give you hand a cramp doing time consuming small work

Of the three I'd go with the Busse. The others have recurved blades and I just think that's a bad idea for when you need to sharpen in the field.

Like others who have replied, I'd be tempted to get something slightly smaller and thinner for general bushcraft work. A 3-4mm thick fixed blade will be more than adequate for batoning, even without the power of Infi, and will slice better. If you have heavier chopping to do, it also provides the perfect excuse to invest in a Battle Mistress... or an axe... or both... or several of both :D

oach that BM i've seen for a arm and leg would love to have one though
i have the ej ericson maro camp hattchet i just like fixed blades for the protablity
so far the busse is winning

The Rats are SR101 steel (mostly). Here is some info on the Swamp Rat stuff. It has a lot of the same characteristics of INFI, but is slightly less corrosion resistant (but no worse than any other high carbon steel). Remember they're coated blades, so you only have to worry about the exposed edge.

The Scrapyard Yard Guard is esentially the same knife as the SW Mini Uncle Mojo, but with a different handle material (Resiprene-C; a hard rubber-like compound) and yet another different steel (SR77). Still the same warrantee. Scrapyard website. The yard Guard is only available on the secondary market though, but show up pretty often on the exchange here for around $130-$150.

thank you spyder your being very helpfull i read the review buy cliff stamp he cut the hinge off a suv door with a swamp but not many talk about them other than there forum. need to add the swamps to the poll hun???

Swamp Rat and Scrap Yard are what I would consider budget Busse blades. You get a lot more value for your money with these two lines than with any Busse.

You don't feel as reluctant to use them either. JMHO.

Have you been over to the Busse forum, to ask if anyone lives near to you and is willing to let you have a look at a BATAC? I think it's worthwhile. I'm in the UK, so no help there, but I certainly wouldn't mind for someone local to me.

It is a lot of money to spend and it's worth handling one first if you're not sure. I took the risk and I'm glad I did, but YMMV.

Swamprats are definately a good choice for less cash. The Ratmandu seems to have a very good reputation as a field knife, if you can get hold of one. I wouldn't mind one myself.

You might find that you want to thin the edge out a little on any Busse-family knife to make it a better slicer, unless you plan on chopping up Cold Steels with it. I did on my BATAC.

I don't really want to vote as I don't know you circumstances how much other kit you really need to buy. My way has always been to save up for the best of whatever I wanted, but that does slow things down and restricts what I can do when it might be better to just buy something cheaper and get out and use it.

Good luck with your choice,
Rick.

It doesn't hurt to ask. It's been done before. You might not get an offer, no one might live near enough, but if you don't ask, you definately won't. Generally the folks on the Busse forum are very helpful if they can. Personally I love to share the pleasure of handling a good blade; some think of it as 'showing off' but it's not mostly. It's sharing the fun. Others do love to show off their collections, and why not?

You are serious about the knife, it's not like you are just looking to 'Busse bash' so I don't see anything wrong with heading over there to ask.

If it's a safe queen, they might not let you beat it though... But at least you might be able to see what it feels like in the hand. That would have been enough for me to know for sure, given everything I had read about the steel anyway. At the end of the day, if it doesn't feel right in your hand, it's not the knife for you no matter how good the steel is. If it does feel right, then rest assured that it won't let you down.

Another reason is to see if you think you prefer the standard slabs or magnum slabs. I can't make my mind up really, but the only magnums I have are on my Heavy Heart. They certainly work for me on there. Don't think that if you hands are not big, you won't like magnums. I doesn't really work out like that.

Rick.

FYI - there is a Scrap Yard Yard Hook (the same blade style as the Swamp Rat Mini Mojo) currently for sale over in the exchange for $125. Only difference from the Yard Guard is that there is a blade catch hook at the top of the blade.

A Yard Guard here for $175 with sheath.

Foxyrick is right. The guys over on the Busse forum are a good bunch and will answer your questions. Don't be afraid to ask if anyone is near you and would be willing to let you look at their knife. Heck I'd let you look and try out my BATAC but I'm a little bit out of your way.

Spyderphreak makes a good point about Swamp Rats. Great knives, same guarantee, less cost. Can't go wrong. I own both Busses and Swamp Rats. I like both brands equally as each knife I own fills a specific niche.
