Here is a fighter/utility knife forged from W1(thanks Aldo). Great stuff, bit tricky to forge down from that thickness but it gives you a great control over the taper and dimensions. Here it is rough ground and ready for heat treat.

Hope to get something nice for the handles. Going to clay coat quench this one, in water(first try with W1 in water).

Hey, I really like that grind. I really want to get that sweeping shoulder look. Great looking knife!

Oh, you hollow grinders think you're so superior :D Man, only 25 knives away from my KMG....okay, maybe 50. Depends on how many supplies I have to buy in between. I wanna see this one when it's done!

No no no you misunderstood, it was flat ground on a 10 inch wheel. Instead of running across the wheel like for a hollow, run up and down with the wheel. You need atleast a 10 inch wheel or else you get divets(like with my 5 inch wheel), and you get a pretty smooth flat grind. The taper on this thing is SO vicious!

Thanks David! I am hoping it doesn't curve up too much from the clay treat.

Hi Sam, I like your knife and the way you ground it also.
I think I understand what you are saying about using the 10" wheel to go up and down, so to speak. How does the end result differ from using a platen? Is it easier, or what?

Can I say SWEEET??? Cant wait to see it finished. I am thinking about making a KMG clone because it seems like the best knife grinder or one of the best I should say.

I like it! It's got some really good looking lines, nice and clean. What are you thinking about for handles Sam?

Looking forward to seeing the finished product :)

Thanks guys! Don, IMHO it is just a bit easier for me so far than the platen(I don't have much practice with the platen yet so....take that with a grain of salt). Using the wheel in this way however allows you to get nice sweeping lines and things com out a bit softer then with the platen. You need atleast a 10 inch wheel to not get a load of divets, the larger the contact area with the steel the better and smoother. I think it get's just a SLIGHTLY less flat than with the platen, due to the pressure on the rubber, but i have not done any testing to the contrary.

Nate, I gotta try and find some amboyna, i really only ever feel like using that hehe.

Matt, i am keeping my fingers crossed on that one too! I have never used W1 before, so hopefully i'll have a nice pot of luck.

I agree Sam, grinding on the wheel is easier for me and thus I ruin less knives that way. I run a 8" wheel then do a quick touch up on the flat area.

The knife is looking good, rather beastly I think. What are you using for clay?

Furnace cement, sure wish i could get my hands on some satanite...... Gotta sell some knives before i build up the good equipment and supplies.

You want some free satanite? I have a bit more than I'll need for a while so I could spare two pounds. I also have 5 gallons of natural clay, want any?

I have a few sets of amboyna burl scales sitting around, im sure i could come off a set...let me know....we can work out some sort of deal on them

Mike I sure would appreciate that! What's your email?

Dan, that would be awesome! I'll take whatever you can spare, what's your email and i'll send you shipping address and stuff.

Thanks a ton guys you rock!

HT went almost flawless! The only problem was the clay broke off on one side, so I am not sure just what the hamon might or might not look like. It was very evident with the blue temper color on the one side, but not so much on the other. I will polish it up and see, damn furnace cement hehe! the 1095 tanto i did also would have come out much better, but i had poor results drawing it back and forth through the forge and didn't get a proper heat, and the hamon dips off the edge at the tip:(. But for quenching both in salty warm water with a drop or two of dish soap and no cracks I would say overall not a bad day:D. Also HT'd 4 hammer heads from 1045 in the salty soapy water, each one came out GREAT, cannot wait to handle them up and test them out. 1045 get's SUPRISINGLY hard in warm water.

Glad to hear that the quench went well!

Geee I wonder how we could fix your uneven heating problem... use propane ;). I hope you post some pictures when the fighter and tanto are finished.
