W2 from start to finish

Nice one Ricky. See the smoky stuff coming off the line? That's what W2 can do that deeper hardening steels can't. Low manganese is the trick.

Thanks Don. Finished It Forged w2 w hamon and desert ironwood Damascus spacer.

Very Nice! That's a beautiful lookin blade right there, and I really like that piece of ironwood  One thing that would make me nervous is having that hole drilled and left square around the edges during hardening, it doesnt take much when you're that close to the (thin) edge to induce cracks. Though I like the way the "spanish notch" looks, I would at least try to use a needle file to slighty smooth over the hard edges, doesn't have to be a huge bevel using a coutersink or anything. Anyway, thanks for sharing your progress pics as well, I hope you keep this thread goin, as long as you're playing with the W2 at least . I have a feeling you might, as hamon (yep, that's how "hamon" is said in the plural) can be VERY addictive ;)

I just got my new post anvil in yesterday so I'll prob set it up in some temporary way so I can play around with it at least till I decide how I want to mount it :)

Now, if you really wanna experiment with different polishing techniques that can make your hamon turn out frosty looking etc.. try something like liquid flitz and some 1500 grit silicon carbide powder etc.. There are plenty of things that can be used to really make the subtle (but coolest!) effects of the hamon POP!

Here is an older thread of Nick Wheelers' that shows some different polishing techniques and substances used in case you're interested: http://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/18516-polishing-a-clay-hardened-knife-blade/
