I had to cut some rope to tie a tv I just bought into the trunk of my car, when I was asked by the store clerk,(I'm sorry Associate),in Wal-Mart who helped me load it into my trunk,"Why do you carry a knife like that?" , it was a BM 730 Ares, IMHO not a scary looking folder. I replied, after cutting the rope,"In case some day I need it to save your life.";) at which point he replied," I hope it never comes to that, but if it does I hope it's as sharp then as it is now."

What would you have said?

...........I have a Sebenza:eek: Of course I am a part time sporting goods ass. at the local Wal-Mart Supercenter. Thats how I earn the extra cash to be able to say "I have a Sebenza" ;) :D

p.s. I also have a BM 730..........great knife:)

Your reply sounds good to me. Depending on my mood, I may have said none of your damn business! It's very annoying when people see you use a knife for tasks like cutting rope or opening a package, and ask why you carry "that thing"! They have eyes, they see that you are using it as the useful tool it is. Next time someone asks, tell them you're a hired killer, smile, and walk away! (Jeez, sorry, I haven't had lunch yet;))

I usually ask them a question back

"How often have you wished you had a cutting tool when you go about your daily bussiness?"

This usually stops them and they think for abit and then conversation is over..

Cheers

I think what bothers me most is when someone asks a question like that or approaches me as though my knife is a "dangerous problem". I have been asked many times about "my weapon" which I usually respond in the same way:

"Any item can be called a weapon if used in a destructive or threatening way. My knife is a tool. It is as legal as any other tool. I read an article about a fellow who clubbed a person over the head with his shoe. In court he was convicted of assult with a deadly weapon. His shoe only (ONLY!!!!) became a weapon when he used it in a dangerous fashion."

Here is what I would tell him is my honest to God answer, "We live in a fallen world with lots of bad people. If only a handfull of men would have had knives like mine on September 11th, the course of human history would be different."

I am not ashamed to carry a knife for protection. As a matter of fact, my Cuda Maxx goes everywhere with me.

Dave,

Sadly, the problem is, a handful of men DID have knives (or similar) on Sept 11, and thus they are forever burned into the popular consciousness as something terrorists use as weapons. Can't fight that kind of bad PR. Sad, unfortuante, but for most people who do not carry, this is all they know about knives - those arabs had them. Not to rationalize the concept, but we gotta face facts. Saying "I carry one because other bad people might have one" doesn't make people look at them any more comfortably. However, saying "I use it all the time to trim string, cut an apple, dig a stone out of my tire, carve a plastic part to fit better" bla bla bla at least puts it in a more favorable and less threatening light.

Like m@thew says, "It's better to have a knife and not need it, than to need a knife and not have it".;)

"....To buy me a few seconds time so I can get to my gun, Oh...and cut strings, wrappers and everything else"

My other favorite question was "Why do you carry a .45?"

Stock answer: "Because they don't make a .46"

sgt 127: that's a nice one for the 45
I wish I could fire one here...... :(

Ejt, you are wrong to concede the philosophical argument and lie about the reason for carrying the knife. You must make the argument that a weapon is neither good or evil. It is a object that can take a life or save a life. People can be educated. Once you concede the moral ground, it is not long until your weapons are banned or confiscated. Short term - you can carry your knife. Long term - you will lose it.

I'm sorry. Did I deprive you of the pleasure of doing your customer service duty by chewing through this rope for me with the only modestly sharp thing you have on you... your teeth? Shame on me. Let's untie it, get some new rope, tie it up again, and you can have the honors.

No?

Oh.

I carry my pocket knife because it enables me to stop off at local businesses, buy television sets, and put them in my trunk. This enables local business to pay the salaries of their employees, retain their employess, and maybe even hire more employees.

For the lack of a knife, the TV set could not be put in the trunk. For the lack of putting the TV set in the trunk, the TV set was not sold. For the lack of a sale of the TV set, the store clerk lost his job.

Any more questions?

I would have said

"Im the wal mart killer the devils trail boss, and when they find your body boy....Ill put up a road side cross. Now hand over your wallet reeeeeeeaaaalll slow.

Whoa ! Chuck, you just made my day :D LOL!

On a more serious term though, when people ask question like that, the underlying (not asked question) is: are you going to use it on people?

To make it more acceptable, replying on the usage as tool is ok, but of course the next phrase should be: in case there is a BG out there, then it can be used against it.

It won't take out completely their fear of us (they tend to, just because we have it with us) but they shouldn't be a bully to us (specially in the office ;) )

Just my two cents.

I don't have any idea what I would have said, I can't recall the last time someone asked me the "Why" question.

But I hope it would have been something as polite and constructive as what T. Erdelyi said!

Good work guy!
:D

I usually say "to cut things." I get asked the why question when I am cutting htings, so usually the sheeple put 2 and 2 together.

Sheeple thinking:
"hmm.. he has a knife to cut things.. hmm... makes sense... can't cut thigns unless you have a knife, and he needs to cut things... hmm... so simple, why didn't I think of that before..."
