Wal Mart Native!

1/3 of the Walmarts across the nation are going to carry Natives, basically as a market test.

Wal Mart needs to put a sign up explaining the difference between AUS6 and CPMS30V. Most buyers don't know the difference between cheap steel and the class steels ("perception is reality.") They perceive the AUS6 to be equal to the S30V. The Natives would out sell the others hands down.

only slightly out of context this is what Sal had to say over in the Spyderco forum: http://spyderco.com/forums/showthread.php?p=194630#post194630

Actually, the Native was originally designed for Wal-Mart, many years ago. Camillus was going to make the knife, but the deal didn't happen. Hence the BRK 1st generation model. The model has gone through 4 steels and a number of variations and has now gone full circle.

The Wal-Mart deal has been in process for many months. They are testing one model in about a third of their stores. They are only carrying the Native in plain edge, S30V. I couldn't say anything here because Kelly wanted to inform our dealers first. She sent out letters last week. Very high integrity lady.

The Native suffered the same "situation" as the Caly jr. The large dealers don't want to stock more than "one plastic handled Spyderco of the same size". The Delica has always been our best seller (3" blade) so the 3" Native and 3" Caly jr. never got a shot at the "big market".

The specialty knife shops, like Country Knives, carry all of the models, for which we are grateful, but their are few of those type shops.

The original plan was for byrds, but Wal-Mart wanted a USA made high quality folder. They are difficult to work with, because of all of the details, but they are extremely professional.

Hopefully the Native will do well in the "big Market".

I hope Spyderco doesn't get sucked into the walmart vortex and crushed. :(

I got one in Fredericksburg Va. today. $41.50 total. Can't beat that with a stick!

also, I prefer the Native to my Native III. It's thin, and I would have been happy with VG-10!

Ugh, I absolutely hate going into our local walmart, but may have to make an exception for this. Our walmart has some very scary people shoping and working there. In particular, there are always a bunch of LSP's (Large Spandex People) in the store. These people can be really difficult to get around when they are in the aisle.

I only go there any more for 9mm ammo, and I have a pre-planned route that gets me in and out in a minimal amount of time. My route goes straight to the sporting goods counter, and then it's a straight shot down the aisle to a double door exit out the garden center. The double door exit is nice because there is no greater there to slow my progress, and if I happen to encounter an LSP I can usually still squeeze by them through the double doors without slowing up much.

Are the knives usually at the sporting goods counter? If so, I can probably take my usual route. :)

Well I have a 38" waist but I will answer you anyway. Yes they are in sporting goods.
Sorry, didn't mean to come off as ranking on big people, just very large people who insist on wearing spandex. ;) I'm kind of a big person myself, but you won't catch me in spandex. ;)

Is the Walmart Native a redesign?

I picked one up last night, and even a quick look gave the impression that it was a bit different than the last Native I owned.

The Choil seems a bit smaller and is now somewhat hooked, and the blade seems a bit more sleek. And the hole seems to be smaller, but it might be that I am just used to the 14mm hole now.

Anyway, I don't care for it, and am going to return it today.
