Check it out - a little machining project that I think went very well. I just sort of made it up as I went along. It is a machined (billet) aluminum tube that has 5.5 inches of storage in the handle. It affixes to the wooden staff (an ash stave) with a 3/8th inch lag bolt that has been recessed to accept the wood. It has three o-rings in the cap for security and water proofing. It has a British survival compass in the top. I plan on installing a small ferrocerium stick in the cap for fire starting.

I plan on having this hard anno'd at CCM machining in California and then epoxying it it together with two ton epoxy.

It was fun to make - and now the pics:

Thanks for looking,

Thats a great idea, and something you'd always have with you in the woods.

Looks like fine workmanship as well.

Thanks for sharing this idea.

Looks awesome..why did you use a machine type thread and not a wood screw type ? I love to get one...Beautiful Job !

Very good point on the machine thread. One - it is what I had handy - but with the epoxy soaking the wood at it being a 16 TPI thread - it is plenty coarse and should hold very well.

That's a cool idea. I love hiking with a staff. Of course most of the time I'm using it to corral the little one or move briar bushes out of her way.

You thought about offering that as a separate part? Would be easy enough to add to an existing staff.

that is way cool. you should market that. I know rei would sell something like that. I'd be the schmuck to buy one....

very nice, a truly wonderful idea. Came out slick! When are you going to list them for sale...? :)

Siguy,

Pressfit. It is three o-rings in a pressfit.

Rocky,

The wrist strap is going to be installed in the wooden portion. The reality is that the aluminum portion is higher than the handed portion (unless you are going down hill).

There was something similar marketed a few years back, it never worked because it was way too big and bulky. Essentially, the entire stick was hollow and filled with all sorts of cheap crap that would do no good in the woods. Your design is simple and transferable from stick to stick.

This is a great idea. You really should market it.

What does the strength of it seem to be? If you put much weight on it, would it break out of the wood?
