I am planning on putting together a survival kit that contains items only from walmart. I realize some walmarts do have items others do not carry. So i guess my goal is to get input from the people on here, to see if there local store carries the items. I understand some are not fans of wally world so i apoligize in advance. The endstate of this project is to have a by item list of a general survival kit that anyone can go purchase while traveling. I am looking for input from anyone. Also I plan to test the final kit. The test would involve 48 hours in the wild with only the kit that we create. So come one come all and give in put or shoot down the "wally world survival kit project"! I have not really established any parameters as to the size of such a kit, so any and all input is welcome. I will be putting pics of my ideas on here as i progress in putting together my kit.

Totally doable. You can buy Iodine tabs, first aid kits and accessories (piece it together yourself), Magnesium bar, Waterproof pelican style cases, match containers, spectra line (cheapest spot to buy it actually), snare wire (hardware department labeled brass wire 22-24 gauge I think), hooks, sinkers, duct tape, whistle (low quality though, and I would recommend a Fox 40 instead of Walmart brand), mylar blanket, and almost everything you'd need (almost).

Not a bad spot to find a LOT of inexpensive equipment. Some things like the whistle I recommend NOT skimping on though. You must give us the rundown when you come through and back it up with pictures.

great suggestions/ideas!!! i understand about the lower quality stuff, IMO the 550 type cord walmart sells, sucks, but my goal is to build this kit with only walmart items, this includes the knife. I am thinking of using a knife from the kitchen section, to conserve on cost.

Do you have a specific budget for all of these items ?

not really thinking about a budget yet, however i guess firearms should be out of the question due to the fact that California walmarts dont sell them. Really just looking for ideas.

The wallmart over here carries Fox40 in the boating section.

Walmart has some decent canteens too.

There are some decent quality knives in the case at the one here...leatherman, SAK, Buck, Kershaw, gerber at not too bad of prices.

I have one question, and one comment.
1. Why? seriously..just wondering.
2. I am against supporting Walmart. I know that this is borderline political, but I have to say...walmart killed small town america. Amongst other forces...but I wouldnt shop there, at gunpoint.
Just my 2 cents, I will get off my soap box now...and sorry, I understand your thread is interesting, but there are so many American companies you could spend your hard earned money with.

According to their site, they have a Coleman flashlight that has a Cree bulb and 115 lumens on 3 AAA batteries in store.

1 Quart stainless saucepan for under $10.

Paring knife for food prep and light wood working.

A tin of Altoids :D

Bicycle inner tube (Ranger bands/fire starter/strips of elastic for tying)

Clear plastic sheeting or tarp

buck 119
machete
SAK or leatherman

One point of contention--Wal*Mart machetes would be considered as toys if it weren't for the fact that they were dangerous to the user. The blades are low quality sheet metal with about as much hardness as a piece of well-cooked linguini, and the handle scales are insubstantial low-grade hollow plastic that will bust off the instant you look at it wrong.:barf::barf::barf:

The Buck 119, SAK, and Leatherman are all sound choices though. :D

The Walmart near me sells Mag bars, UCO candle lanterns, Micro Mag Lites, waterproof matches, pin-on compasses, and all kinds of other decent stuff. I actually got a bunch of stuff for my PSKs from WalMart.

WalMart has killed small-town USA and the result for many of us is actually having to shop there because they've put local places out of business. I hate to support them but around here, it's the only place to get a lot of things.

I buy a lot of my emergency supplies from Walmart, from fiskers folding saw, SAK's, Rem870, ammo, fishing supplies, water treatment tabs. If its available, I will pick it up there. If not, I purchase from a multitude of local and online sources. But I will shop WalMart first. Why...

My family was involved in a serious accident, my wife and all four children were seriously injured, ( my wife still has 4 more surgeries in the next 3 months,) without the medical insurance provided by and support from Wal Mart, we would have long since been a burden to the taxpayer. For that they have my loyalty.
Not trying to stir the pot, not slinging arrows, just like saving on my emergency supplies, to pay med bills.

I've always had the itch to do somthing very similar to this and will be very interested in the results. As far as geting the knife from walmart to id say a buck 110 would be a good deal, or the larger 119 with an SAK. just my two cent

I see nothing wrong with buying stuff from walmart. I do like shopping from smaller stores around me, but I do not make much and can not afford to pay more for an item out of beliefs. If I made more money sure I would buy other places, but walmart, lowes and the internet are what are fueling my knife and survival addiction.

Actually, most of the filler items in my day pack are from wally world. The only personal items that I get elsewhere for camping are my knife, pack, and specialty items (stuff that has to be ordered).

I've purchased and used from wally world:

Fire sticks
nylon string/fake 550 cord
metal cup
5-in-1 aluminum cooking set
first aid kit
snake bite kit
coleman items
maglite
magnesium bar
matches
compass
mini-candle lantern

I'm sure there's more, but those can be found at most wally worlds in my area (Alice, Corpus Christi, Kingsville). All of these items helped me out in someway, otherwise I wouldn't have remembered them :p Good luck with your kit.

Take care, J.

Are we talking actual survival kit, or a stay in the woods a couple days kit?

What's the duration you're planning for?

Will you accept a Target shopping list, rather than a Wal*Mart one (my Target has a lot more, and a lot better stuff)?

There are more cords than paracord. Any decent nylon line should do you nicely. Although I do like paracord, I certainly didn't have it growing up. Just use common sense and follow the suggestions offered by the fine WS&S folk. You can't go wrong with that!
