Want to buy my first knife (under$50)...please give me your expert advice.

Spyderco Native. You can get it around your price range.
s30v steel, fits the hand like a glove, not too heavy, feels good in the pocket and hand, sharp, and works for any daily task you may have.

+1! I love my native!

BTW, if you want a CE blade, I have an Endura that I plan on selling that I could sell to you for 50, as I like to pass on a great knife to someone starting out. Email of PM me if you're interested. I have some others going up on the site for sale soon, too. I'll hook you up if interested.

Depends? What are you mainly using knife for? The right knife for the right application is so important. As for myself....I keep one for hard use...Kershaw Tremor, Spyderco Tenacious,

Going out at night, I have a gentleman's folder BENCHMADE 580 no hard use...

For hiking outdoor...I want something lite weight like Spy Manix2 LW (3 OZ)

If just for EDC using as protection...just depends what you want...Spring assisted or manual? Locking mechanism?

I had and sold a SOG Flash 2 SAT spring assisted technology...very light weight, very fast with a ARC locking mechanism...works like a AXIS but only on one side.

But if you want Made Is USA...Kershaw offers many under $50.

NewBladeGuy123, you should tell us what State you live in, and what type of stuff you want to do with the knife. Until then, people are just going to recommend their favorite knives under $50, but those knives might not be the best for your purposes / local laws.

The Kershaw Skyline is a good recommendation by earlier posters (I happen to own one too).

If the OP doesn't mind China-made knives, the Kershaw 3/4 Ton might be a good choice (2.75 inch approx blade / 8Cr13MoV) for a beater knife for EDC.

Far from an "expert" here, but if you have an interest in more traditional pocket folding knives, for $50, I'd look into used Case 3 and 4 blade knives. If you're looking for a single bladed, locking, pocket clip style folder in the $50 range, I'd look at the Black Fox BF-70, its a quality construction knife, they saved money on it by using what I assume is 440A blade steel (it says 440, if it were 440C, I think it would say so). I'd also look at some of the less gimmicky CRKT knives in this price range. I can't vouch for the CRKT locking folders, as I don't own any, I do own the Black Fox, and its a quality knife.

If you want a higher end steel, or have to have American made (not a bad thing, but it does cost), I'd say you might need to set aside another $20-$30. $70-$80 seems to be a quality price point, at least at street (internet) prices.

The Kershaw Skyline and Spyderco Delica are both excellent folders in the stated price range and medium size range most often preferred for EDC. They are well made, light, and thin in pocket.

Kershaw Leek or Skyline - Compact and lightweight, making them comfortable to carry. Good steel (Sandvik 14C28N). Made in USA.

Kershaw blem Composite Blade Leek or Blur - Composite blade has a CPM-D2 cutting edge, which is an excellent steel that takes and holds a great edge. Blur is a bit larger, but still fairly comfortable to carry. Also uses Sandvik steel. Blems have no factory warranty, but they are also discounted pretty well. Made in USA.

Ontario RAT-1 - Fairly beefy medium-large folder. Good steel (AUS-8).

Victorinox Swiss Army Knife: Spartan, Tinker, or Compact (2-layers) / Climber or Super-Tinker (3-layers) / Alox Soldier or Pioneer (2-layers) / One-handed Trekker (3-layers) - SAKs are very well made and offer a lot of varied utility. These are all great value and great performing knives.

Spyderco Delica (a little over $50, but you may be able to hunt down a deal on one) - Lightweight, thin, and great ergonomics. Fantastic blade steel (VG-10).

Buck Vantage Select or Avid (the Pro is a little over $50 as well, but you can look around for a deal) - Deep carry clip. Comfortable grip. Decent steel in the Select model (420HC). Good steel in the Avid (Sandvik 13C26). Excellent steel in the Pro (CPM-S30V). Made in USA.

I will make a whole lot of assumptions -

You want a good every day carry knife, a locking knife with a pocket clip.

You want USA made, and quality from a company with a rock solid reputation.

Kershaw Skyline - $35 all day long.

best

Knives are like Pokémon. Gotta catch 'em all! Once you start there is no going back, but you will never be happier about being flat broke at all times. I can say I am quite content with being broke... if only rolling around in my knives wasn't dangerous.

You will never regret buying a Spyderco Delica. I have much more expensive knives, and still carry my delicas.

Svord peasant knife, svord mini peasant knife, case sodbusters, plenty of great steel you can get for under $50 and those 3 will last a lifetime with a little care.

I love my svords and recently purchased 2 of the fixed blade versions as well.
Whatever you decide to purchase, I wish you many years of use and happiness with it.

Chris

Skyline or RAT 1 for a folder.

Skyline for a fixed blade.

Oh heck - get a skyline folder and fixed blade. So you spend $60 instead of $50. You get two great knives.
