Wanted: 1/4'' thick edc knife. Suggestions?

I have similar needs and circumstances. I won't say that price is not an issue, but I will say it's not a big one (it's difficult to think of a knife I really want that I haven't bought). I also wanted a knife that I could edc, at Walmart etc, yet not feel underknifed if I had to run out the back door and into the woods. The only difference is I'm not big on folders. I opted for the ESEE 5 which is 1/4 saber ground (like I said, this was not due to it's low price tag). I've actually edc'd that knife A LOT and I plan on getting an ESEE 6 simply because its thinner. Truth is - 1/4" is freaking fat :-(

Ya i have an O-1 hunting fixed blade knife that i made for a friend. The only thing ive really seen is that e.r knife and the mantis mt9c knife. I just need something hd for work. I broke the tip off my kershaw leek the other day. And so thats when the hunt began!

so you're looking to buy an abrams tank because the bumper fell off your toyota corolla in a fender bender

the leek is light duty, gentleman's knife meant for slicing, not prying. if you want a stronger knife, buy something from kershaw's zero tolerance line, they are heavy duty knives.

Well i have felt kinda naked since that happened. I am just playin it safe with regards to width. I dont like havin to replace tools very often. I geuss i shoulda put an above average thick folder instead of 1/4".

Sounds like you like to abuse knives, no matter how sturdy a knife.... you can break it.

Find something cheap so when you break it, it won't break the bank.

If price is really no option.... buy a fixed blade for camping, make it a Busse, and for work any over built folder will do, Hinderer comes to mind.

EDIT: I thought of something better, commission a knife maker for a custom that you think will fit your needs.

i suggest starting your search by figuring an approximate size and weigh that will work for you (hard use folders tend to be heavier), than we can narrow down your options.

The Zero Tolerance ZT-0300/0301 are certainly stout - as is the Benchmade 755 MPR - but it's only .164" of Bohler m390. I also have a Boker Haddock @ ~.200" of Bohler N690, but that is at the Wharncliffe-like blade's spine - and it is a hollow grind to the edge. I have the 0301, 755, & Haddock - and I prefer the 755 as my 'most common' EDC.

Now, if it's a 5" fb you want, you could have several Becker/KaBar BK2's for any of the above examples' cost.

Come on people, the guy wants a folder with a quarter inch thick blade, that's what he said. Help him find one instead of trying to talk him out of it.

If money, as you said, isn't an issue, get yourself a Crusader Forge folder. It's not quite 1/4 thick (.20 I believe), but I'm still pretty sure it's what you want. Get one and then come back to the forum and post pictures of it :): http://www.crusaderforge.com/TACTICALCUSTOMFOLDERSCF.htm

if you want toughness YET usability go with 3/16 stock.

If your really stuck on 1/4 check out extrema ratio's offerings- they are just insane.

You would probably be ok with one of the ZT 300 series or a strider...That or you can try to find a Rick Hinderer xm-18 on the exchange......Extrema Ratio RAO Folder

I like the ZT 0300 suggestion. Strong tip, beefy handle, stout blade. Not the pokiest or best slicer, but it's definitely a good choice for anything from slicing tape to popping open crates to whittling a tent peg. I wouldn't want it for picking splinters but for less fine cutting it's a great choice at a reasonable price.

If I recall correctly, the OP was only asking for suggestions on knives, not advice on why he doesn't need a 1/4 inch knife. Who cares why he needs one? Why
does it matter? If you're just going to bash him, don't post.

that being said, one that comes to mind is the Mantis Pit Boss. They have mixed reviews, and from what I've seen most people either love or hate them. It's not quite 1/4 inch, but it's close. If price really isn't an issue, check out the Direware Solo V-1. Again, not quite 1/4 inch, but close.

I want something i can take from work (shipping & receiving) to a campsite and not worry about breaking it. Folder would be more appropriate. 5" blade length maximum. Thanks for everything so far!
My Izula II does exactly what you're looking for. I even have the same job.

Tops/buck csar-t. Still pretty thick not a 1/4" but have any of you heard of em?

Just like any other knife...if you are bound and determined to, you can break it. I would imagine in your job you are opening boxes, cutting plastic, etc. It'll do that just fine.

Would I take a sharpenedpry-bar folding tanto like that camping? No. I'm not sure what it would do better than just about any slicer (Mora, Opinel, SAK, etc) or dedicated chopper while in the woods.
