Wanted: Knife that can survive chopping steel bars

Whee whooooo. You must be one fast dude.:D

Sounds like you need a hunting sword. I beleive that's what they were called. I have a book somwhere at Home I got from centaur forge. It has quite a few pics of old swords even George Washinton had a hunting sword.

Jerry Hossum, makes something similar I think.

Chasing em out the dumpster I bet. Here in Tulsa we get coons, possums foxes and coyotes right in the city. They frown on gunfire in the city limits.:p

Might try an airgun there, MikeS though I can't remember Tulsa laws off top of my head. I have a nice modified Crossman .22 CO2 gun that'd be great for possums and stuff. Extended plunger thing to push pellet farther forward(gives more room for air behind it), variable valve on CO2 for more or less air, Rifle barrel on it(it started life as a handgun) to allow more power again. Fun little thing, and surprisingly accurate.

I've hunted racoon and coyotes for years and I have never seen or even heard of such a thing. I sure wish you lived closer so I could follow you around with my camcorder for a few days, it would have to make for a very interesting video. A good cheap 22 would save you a lot of wear and tear, and like Mr. Onion states you'll end up with some saleable furs. Then a small 2"-3" blade will do the skinning.

Just my 2 cents, happy hunting. :D

Bill

thanks for the comment. I've honestly thought the same thing about getting a movie of it.
However, it's clear ya didn't read my thread on the general discussion forum. A .22 or pellet gun would get my face torn off by a pack of angry coons, or get me killed with ricochets. Dude, you may find this hard to believe, but it's rare to get an "instant stop" with even my .45! I am eliminating vermin from around our family farm, often inside sheds and silos. That's where the steel and concrete come in, and also why I can't always use a gun. Trapping has just never really interested me. This kind of hunting is so close that saving the fur is usually about the last thought in my mind. I'm too busy saving my own hide! :D

Possum, I think CPM 3V at HRC 59 to 60 will do what you want. The
blade geometry and thickness will be very important here. Why don't you e-mail Jerry Hossum and ask him. He will know. As others have stated, a forged 5160 blade, edge hardened, would be ideal, but you said you wanted to make it yourself. HAVE PAUL BOS HEAT TREAT THE 3V!

Hmmm, how about a Zulu style spear? It has a large long double edge blade on a relatively short handle(for a spear). Apparently they were used very effectively for close quarters combat.

Defenatly give Bruce Evans a call, I'd go with 5160, or posibly L-6.

L-6 if my personal favorite for abusive situations, I have tested L-6 by cutting nails with a hammer on the spine with little to no edge damage. Should be able to get similar performance from 5160.

Or you can come across an old sawmill saw blade and use it. Most of the early ones were L-6 I beleive.

Good luck

DAMN'T! DAMN'T! DAMN'T! I got 600 friggin bucks rotting in the damn garden just from last summer  An I thought it was worth the trouble trapping em just to keep em out of my sweet corn.

I kill em with a .22 though, I'd sooner hack my foot in half than anything else usin a knife ;)

Ken, it has been a lot of years since a coon hide would bring $40.00. The PETA folks have hurt the fur market.

Russia also used to import a lot of American fur, and their market has been iffy for a long time.

Coon hides here in Kansas will bring between 10.00 and 15.00 this winter, approximately. Up north farther where the fur is higher quality, they bring a little more.

I wish I could take my hounds up to Possums family farm and hunt a night or two... I could thin the coons out for him.:D

This is hilarious! I am laughing my a$$ off right now. I hunt too and used to trap and have had to use my knives to end the suffering of a wounded deer when I was out of shots but possum, what you r doing sounds like a video game :D. Anyways I have been educated today. Iowa deer season is 3 weeks away. Can anyone recommend a good long bowie that will allow me to reach out and touch one when our pushers push a nice one by me? Slugs are getting expensive so I am considering doing possums approach. I am laughing with u possum not at u. Sounds like u r having fun at it though and thats good. Cory

I find it hard to believe that so many people here have taken this thread and it's ridiculous premise seriously enough to actually offer advice to this nut.

Blue Sky, to each his own. I thought it was definitely a wild one too but whats wrong with offering advice or having some laughs. Lifes too short so try to ease up. We are all from different parts of the world with different views and different upbringings. If human life was in question I would take it more seriously but it is not so I laugh at it. I used to live on a farm and know what its like to have nuisance coons and possums living in the barns. I used to kill them also only I went out with my gun and took care of it. Possum, It is ashame that for your purpose you would consider using a fine knife. If it was me I would go find an old machete or an aluminum bat. Why use something like a Bruce Evans bowie to just tear it up. Cory

I have my yard ringed with Claymore mines in case I get attacked by a horde of Racoons. If they breech that line of defence I go the the select fire M-16 with 100 round Beta C mag. During this time my wife will be on the phone to the neighbor who has a totally cool restored WWII Scout car complete with belt fed Ma Deuce 50 cal and water cooled belt fed 30 cal. If that dont work we lock ourselves in the underground bunker and call in the ATF and FBI to burn the place to the ground. :D

Mr. Sky, since you don't know me I'll just let your comments slide off my back, but I do want everyone here to know that I am NOT a total nut. I've been making miniature knives part time for around 10 years now, and have several knifemaking customers who can testify to my sanity. I have not typed one word that wasn't completely true.

Yes, it is kind of a shame when I chip the edge of a good knife. However, I tried cheap knives, machettes, and even aluminum ball bats many times in the past, and you know what? They don't work worth a damn compared to a good, big, Bowie! :D I guess if you want the performance (as I do) then ya gotta pay the price.

Sorry about this, but I still say check out a khukri from the HI website.

http://www.himalayan-imports.com/

Maybe something lighter and faster like a Sirupati or a Kobra? They also have a few "Bowies". I find that the khukris that I have (5160) are easily repaired after dinged or chipped due to their grind / differential heat treat. Their edges roll instead of chip, and you can knock the edge straight again with a burnishing tool of some sort or if need be a small hammer.

I too would have trouble working with a several hundred dollar knife, but For the price I dont think you can go wrong, and besides they were meant to be abused.

I guess I am wierd myself as when growing up I also worked on farms and found that a knife or pitch fork worked better at getting rid of small critters, due to the fact that you didn't want to shoot anybody else if the billet ricoshaied (?spelling)or went astray,Plus then you had the other animals around that would definately get your back side tanned if you was to shoot one of them. Also if I remeber correctly lighting a match in a grain silo was a definate NO-NO,if I remember correctly they do sometimes have a build up of gasses that could ignite and blow your butt up (please correct me if I am wrong)

I want to see who has the guts to pick on Larry Harley for hunting wild pigs with nothing but some dogs and a Bowie Knife..I believe that is even wilder than chasing a coon in a silo with a knife...

Davey Crocket hunted Bears with a Bowie, was he crazy?Maybe but no one told him....
To each his own about the use of his knife and who wants to use a piece of junk when they can have a nice knife,I mean how many of you own real nice expensive guns when a crudy old military rifle that you can pick up for little of nothing that would do the job just as well...

In my opinion this was a good question and not unjisyifiable.
Guess I am wierd also,
Bruce

What's so nuts about deleteing varmits?

If you ever been in a coon fight I'd say that's a pretty even match. Knives vs. coons

We used to club rabbits for dog feed.

Hey Rob if I ever come up to see you I'll notify you first by fax, phone, email and bullhorn :D

you can take the boy out of the country but you can't take the country out the boy.:p

I think it is actually the dust particles left over from the grain. The fine powder floating in the air is flammable and acts kinda like gun powder or a gas leak when ignited.

I didnt think of it that way before. Actually, I need to go dust off my ole M48A 8mm Mauser and give it a good run for its money.

After all this talk of knife hunting I am thinking of all the critters around my place that would be fun to hunt in this fashion.

Hey, maybe you guys can come up with a "Squirrel Sticker", and a "Racoon Sticker", to go with a "Pig Sticker". Sorta like a set!! :)
