Wanted: Knife that can survive chopping steel bars

I thought it was Daniel Boone that kilt bars with a knife. No maybe he was the one that grinned em down. Any way Im not argueng with him or Larry Harley.

yep grain dust or any other dust will work for that matter.

Friend of mine said he watched a guy demo this with a cardboard shipping tube and a candle. Sprinkled dust in the tube until it reached the candle.

Unfortunately his head was too close to the end of the tube.

He lost hair and eyebrows  LOL

RE: Blue Sky

I don't consider this guy a nut!?

Lots of folks hunt with knives, so rodent eradication is not far fetched. I live in central California. There are a number of guys that hunt wild pigs using knives and dogs. Now that is a sport not for the faint of heart, but is quite popular with the ranch kids. They use whatever knives are at hand. Seems a 5" bowie is just fine for the job.

I've thought about doing it, but I have trouble controlling a 12" bowie duct taped on the end of a 100 foot poll while I'm in a tree wearing my kevlar suit.

What about a Cold Steel bad axe it is inexpensive and short and sharpens up nice.I have done a little modifing on mine like lightening the handle and sharpening the top edge for throwing, cord wrapped and a wrist lanyard. You can sharpen this on a grinder.Or a machete.Start with a heavy one and get creative.make it a coon killin masterpiece.http://www.botachtactical.com/botach/colsteelspec1.html http://www.botachtactical.com/botach/colsteelutha.html The machetes only run 6 bucks. Here is a whole page of inexpensive coon killers http://www.ltspecpro.com/specialtyitems.html Have a good Thanksiving.......R

I understand where this guy is coming from. I have killed snakes (cant stand them things) with all kinds of things, including a small bowie on the bank of a river fishing (it was a cotton mouth about 3 ft. long), but mostly i have a small katana type sword (26 inch blade if i remember right) that i use to kill all kinds of snakes with by cutting thier heads off. My wifes parents live near a swamp so i usually gets lots of practice. They dont like to hear gunfire close to the house, afraid someone might get hit by a riccochette or something. I also killed one with my sword that was in the garage, sure dont want to shoot any gun in there. :D

You know, I've read and re-read this thread and I'm still not buying into it. If you need to control pests, by all means do so, but there are better ways. I've hunted for a lot of years and have taken my share of game, but always with the idea that it should done as humane as possible. What I read here doesn't qualify. If you all disagree, that's fine, I can live with that. You're entitled to your opinion.

FWIW
beheading critters is about as humane as you can get. Lots better than poison (makes their belly hurt), bullets (loud noise that hurts ears and isn't always a head shot), traps (out of town for several days and didn't run so got real hungry and thirsty), ball bats (not always a home run), and dogs. The dogs are the best way to go. I had one of the best rat and varmit dog in the country when I was about 14 years old. A good fight between the good dog and the bad varmit makes the dog feel good (even if you have to help them once in a while).
Yep, dogs are my choice and they are always happy to see you when you come home. A good bowie will help cut it up so the dog can eat it better without all the fur in the way. A 52100, Charlie Ochs bowie that has all banite would work real well :).

I just spoke with Mr Evans about this topic. Guys, if you haven't spoken with him, he's a mighty fine gentleman. It's always great to talk with a fellow knife nut. He gave me more and better advice in an hour over the phone than I got here all week. No offense intended there, just praise for his knowledge. Though I must admit, I was hoping to hear more advice about the knife than the coons around here.

So I guess here's where I'm at with it so far. I'll probably go with 5160, (unless someone has other thoughts to throw in) and... well, maybe I'll try my hand at heat treating, or maybe I'll find someone willing to do a clay coated heat treat, or maybe I'll send it to Bruce, or maybe I'll make a whole pile of blades with different heat treats and see which works best for me... or...

At any rate, it's gonna be hell for the local coon population in the coming months!:D

Mr Sky, I will let you keep your opinion if you do the same for me. But I really gotta tell you, you're missing out on some real excitement!
