A close call. Smoke up for Spectre and the rest of the troops.

Two Afghan citizens prevented a terrorist attack yesterday morning when a vehicle loaded with explosives attempted to crash through the front gate of Camp Phoenix.

"Without any regard for their personal safety, a local Afghan security officer and an interpreter immediately recognized that this was a terrorist attack,". "Together, the two prevented the driver from detonating his explosives after they failed to explode during the crash. With the assistance of the US Security Forces, they dragged the terrorist from the vehicle where they were detained."

"If it wasn't for the quick actions of the local nationals working for the US Forces, several lives would have been lost,".

That is the official press release, but there is more to the story....

edit....tried to edit the title, but forum title won't change anymore. Removed link to story

Cool story, Ted. You know, sometimes I need a reaffirmation in people around the world, especially where our military is involved. Thanks.

Chris

Sounds like an excellent way to snare a bunch of terrorists. Say the name and wait for the killers to walk into a trap. Dangerous game though. What a sacrifice.

He, and his family, should immediately be granted U.S. citizenship and moved to the U.S. if they so desire. We own them a blood debt.

I have emailed both of my Senators and my Congressman. It's very easy to do.

The date of the event turns out to be 1/16/07.

If he's truly crazy he'll fit right in, John. Welcome to America, Bizzaro World.

Probably become a Senator.

Okay...Operational Security guidelines now in place...let's keep it that way, eh?

From now on...a simple "Smoke up for a good guy", eh?

With all due respect, but aren't Spectre's posts, where he depicts his camp's guard tower locations and troop routines, in violation of OPSEC too?

We asked Nasty to mod the post to protect the individuals identity. My bad to post in the first place.

With like respect, the guard towers can easily be seen from the camp perimeter, for hundreds of meters. If I mention we do foot patrols...that can easily be seen, and is common knowledge; if I mention we man the towers...once again...

What I have not done, is give identifying information re a local asset. I have also not given information that is considered to be sensitive by my chain of command (and in fact can tell you I have even removed information that was not sensitive in any way, merely because someone in my CoC was worried it might get him in trouble).

Clear enough?

Hmmm, from your posts I know:

1. Where you're located,
2. Your address,
3. Your birthday,
4. Your rank,
5. What you look like,
6. Your unit and whom you're currently assigned to,
7. What weapons you use and what type of clothing you wear when assigned to them,
8. Vehicle placement at MEDCAPS,
9. The location of your guard posts, their composition. (Your aerial photographs from them make it much easier to plot out how many feet they are from the perimeter- so that I don't have to do the recce myself)
10. The placement, composition and approximate width of your barracks and how they're fortified.

All this information was less known to the enemy than an oddball / highly visible character's name, who is infamous in the area for being the unnoficial "Gate Keeper" at a certain camp.

I trust John has enough of a survival instinct to not publish sensitive material.
Remember sometimes he's the one on that tower.

Stay safe out there John.

And, once again, NV, what have I posted that's sensitive?

1. There are US soldiers on US posts. Woohoo.
2. Helpful to the enemy how? See #1. And that's my mailing address.
3. So? They can send me a card.
4. Big deal.
5. And? I'm wearing a fricking uniform. I'm an enemy of the terrorists. Duh.
6. You don't know where I am, and that company (what you're describing as "my unit") has groups spread out literally across the country.
7. What? You mean the visible weapons slung on my body, or the visible weapons mounted in pits? (what type of clothing you wear when assigned to them) No, you wouldn't know that from anything I've posted. If anything, you have disinformation, which isn't that far from what you have right now.
8. Vehicle placement at MEDCAPS? Convoy ops 101? Don't make me laugh. Of course, the thousands of local nationals in attendance wouldn't notice any type of standard "cover the 4 corners" formation, either.
9. Did you miss my last post? If you had paid any attention for the last six months, you would know that local nationals can walk within a few feet of towers on Phoenix. Plot, my ass. OTOH, I have given almost no information on the guard posts at my current (undisclosed) location- "on top of a mountain"- of course, there's only one mountain in Astan!
10. Once again, don't make me laugh. Local nationals built the barracks, maintain the barracks, and work on the camp every day.

Now, you can keep making up BS, or you can call it day.

Spectre,

IMO, you're missing the context of my post to Nasty.

1. The original post was edited (reason OPSEC) because it linked to "Sgt. Oddball's" real name / nickname. That blog was quoting a government sanctioned newspaper.

2. My post was edited (reason OPSEC) because I wrote that if "Sgt. Oddball" was concerned about his welfare he shouldn't be posing with his picture in a government sanctioned newspaper. That means every person who reads the newspaper knows of him.

3. You described the approximate location of his living quarters and a possible way of murdering him, and being highly cautious you probably divulged it because everybody there knows it anyway.

So if everybody knows who you are and everybody knows who he is, why were all the posts about him edited? If he can be murdered from that public info, can't your MEDCAP convoy be ambushed (and you positively identified) because they think that you might know the location of certain units and there OP's?
