Got these from She Who Must Be Obeyed's brother.

This is from up in the NWT, this chap is lucky to be alive. The guy survived the bear attack. The bear jumped on him while he was sleeping in his tent and he managed to get it off of him and shoot it

One tough camper!

DAmnnnnnnnn! Any more of the story? I'd like to hear a more detailed account.

Thats one very lucky/unlucky guy

HOLY ****!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! my gosh he is lucky to be alive. my thoughts and prayers go out to him. I know for a fact i am not that tough...jeesh...

Woah! Lots of thoughts going through my head like:

I don't think I'll be headed that far north for a camping trip any time soon.
Adrenaline is an amazing thing.
He's one tough guy.
If chicks dig scars, he's set for life.
All the guys at the local saloon telling tales will just have to shut up and go home when he walks in. Not much can top his story.

Puts things into pespective for us as humans to know that there are things out there that will "eat you." I think we tend to "claim victory" in having defeated Mother Nature (whether we see it in a good light or bad) - living in the "post war euphoria" in relative safety and with a certain cockiness and compalcency. Just think how it was several thousand years ago, without vehicles to take shelter in and put distance between ourselves and threats - all the time, not just while out camping. We were like bugs and the world was full of gargantuan toads. Polar Bears just seem to have so little fear or apprehension about humans, at least not like other bears.

Criminy! The guy is SIITING UP for the pic of his back! Good thing he was not dependent upon just a pointy stick to defend himself.

One of my ex-girlfriends was a trainer for aquariums/zoos. She described the unshakable feelings of terror when they were feeding the polar bears. They were trained to go into cages with steel "fence" in front of them, while the trainers came into their area to leave food. Often, the bears would run full speed and slam into the fence trying to get at her while she left the food. She never fully felt safe that the fence would hold, because it would rattle and shake hard.
